development of a country. Most of the countries all over the world, including Vietnam, consider the

investment in education is future’s contribution. Foreign languages, especially English are

supposed to be a vital key for areal and worldwide diplomatic relations. English becomes an official

subject in the national education systems. So as to widen English communication environment for

learners to develop their skills, a wide range of English centers are founded to adapt these

requirements. However, because of many subjective reasons such as time management and

financial issues, not every learner can afford a course of an English center. It is the fact that to
become proficient at a language, we need to master not only the four skills but also the language

knowledge. It takes us a lot of time and effort to be skilled at those. Recognizing reality, self-study

is assumed to be the only solution. Nevertheless, it is impossible that this way can work without

any assistance. Along with the outstanding achievements of information technology, a large

number of applications are invented to support the self-study process such as Camli, Elsa speak,

Hello Talk, Speakly,…etc. Outstanding among them, Duolingo developed by Luis von Ahn, Severin

Hacker is one of the most-used applications.

Duolingo is an American language-learning website and mobile app, as well as digital language

proficiency assessment exam. The company uses the premium model; the app and the website are

assessable without charge, Duolingo also offers a premium service for a fee. Until now, there has

been over 30 languages that are offered on Duolingo app. It is not difficult to use this app.

Duolingo mimics the structure of video games in several ways to engage its users. The topics are

graded from easy to difficult that help users acquire knowledge in each certain topic. After that,

users will use the learned knowledge to finish mini games. Speaking exercises use AI (Artificial

Intelligent) voice recognition to grade how close your pronunciation is to the goal, so you get real-

time feedback about how you’re doing.

In such of context, a large number of previous studies related to using Duolingo in learning English

has been conducted at different levels. Each study, however aimed to highlight the discrete skill or

aspect of language knowledge. For example, abundant research points out the effect of using

Duolingo application in learning vocabulary (Ambara, 2020), whereas there were also a wide range

of research working on the other language skills. Remarkably, the spot light went to Siti (2019)

research on the improvement of listening and speaking. This study was conducted to generalize

and figure out obviously the effectiveness of using Duolingo to aid language learning process.
