Ingredients 1/7
Tap Water
Dissolve some substances
Thermal conductor
Energy conductor: drum rotation
Wetting of textile and surface
Allowing chemical reaction
Helping suspension
Evaporating easily
Water is an essential ingredient for cleaning process, with a major
inconvenient: contains soluble salts (Ca2+, Mg2+) which can become
insoluble and which fix stain on fibers.
Scale formation on the equipment
Incrustation in fibers
Higher settling: electrolytes reduce ionic repulsion
August 2011
Ingredients 2/7
Surfactants/Tensides
Anionic: CO2-, SO3-, S04-
Cationic: NR1R2R3+
Non ionic
Amphoteric
The hydrophobic part is generally based on alkyl groups.
Choice of surfactants is related to different parameters
Washing temperature
Type of textile
Type of builder used
Environmental concern
Product form
Processing type for the production of detergent

Ingredients 3/7
Antiscalants
Complexing agents: forming soluble complex with Ca and/or Mg
Ion exchangers: changing Ca/Mg to more soluble Na salts
Precipitants
1/ STPP
Form Ca and Mg complex
Alkalinity reserve: buffer capacity to maintain high pH
Anti redeposition
Anti incrustation
Improvement of tensides efficiency
But STPP has two major inconvenients
Environmental concern: water eutrophisation
Price fluctuation and availability

Ingredients 4/7
2/ Aminocarboxylates: NTA/EDTA
EDTA/NTA: very good complexing agents
EDTA/NTA: stable vs oxydizing agents
NTA: good biodegradabilty
EDTA: low biodegradability
3/ Hydrocarboxylates: citric/tartric acids
Good biodegradability
Low complexing power
Mainly used for dishwashing and acid cleaners
4/ Phosphonates: HEDP, DTPMP, EDTMP
Average biodegradability
Very good complexing agents
Tendancy: find highly biodegradabel agents with EDTA chelating power
August 2011
Ingredients 5/7
5/ Ion exchangers
Zeolites: not very soluble. Can only treat ions in water but can’t catch
ions on textile surface/equipment. Mainly work on Ca2+ . Do not provide
buffer effect. Need co-builders (polymers) for suspension.
Silicates: meta/disilicates: good Ca/Mg exchange, good alkaline
reserve, stabilizer for bleaching agents, good antiredeposition
properties. Nedd very high dosage in comparison with STPP.
6/ Precipitants
Carbonates: as Ca can form insoluble salts with active ingredients
(tensides), carbonate can be added in low quantity for very stressed
conditions to precipitate partially CaCO3. But this can be considered
only as a side raw material, not able to replace others
August 2011
Ingredients 6/7
Bleaching agents
Chlorine derivatives: very agressive
Perborate
Percarbonate
Peracid
They are used for their decolorizing effect
Enzymes
Proteases: blood, egg, milk, herb, keratin
Lipases: fat
Amylases: starch
They are used to brake stains in small parts to enhance its cleaning by
the active ingredients.

Ingredients 7/7
Anticolor transfer: PVP
Foam Boosters
Antifoams
Optical brighteners

These product are mainly used in tablets and in powder made in
drum mixing.
August 2011
Co-Builder: Dispersant 3/4
• Dispersants are generally used as a cobuilder. They
can’t be used alone without some previously
mentionned products.
• Effects are mainly:
– Crystal growth inhibition
– Dispersion of precipitates in cleaning bath
– Improvement of bleach stability in chlorinated formulations
– Avoid redeposition on fabrics and hard surface
• Copolymers advantages
– Better for low and non phosphate formulations
– Superior processing aid in the production of powder detergents
– Very high dispersants properties (CaCO3 and calcium binding
test)
August 2011
Co-Builder: Dispersant 4/4
• Action
– Ionic charge repulsion
– Steric repulsion
• Dosage
– Low STPP formulation: 1 – 2%
– STPP formulation: 3 – 4%
• Special usage
For cotton fabric, Sodium carboxymethyl celluslose can be used
instead of acrylic acid based products: dosage 0.5 – 1%.
For polyesther, Cellulosic ethers can be used instead of acrylic
acid based products.
Tendancy: such products are mainly promoted due to
environmental concerns.
