0 Preliminary remarks
The SIMODRIVE unit must not be connected to a supply system with
ELCBs (this restriction is permissible according to DIN VDE 0160,
Section 6.5).
In compliance with DIN VDE 0160105.88, all SIMODRIVE units are subject
| toa high-voltage test at the time of routine testing. If the electrical
‘equipment of machine tools is subject to a high voltage test, all
connections must be removed (permissible according to DIN VDE 0113
Part 1, Section 13.2). This measure prevents sensitive electronic
‘components from being damaged.
When operational, protection against direct contact is provided in a form
to allow the unit to be used in enclosed electrical equipment rooms (DIN |,
VDE 0558 Part 1, Section 5.4.3.2.4.)
The circuit diagrams in this manual are block diagrams and do not
necessarily represent the actual circuit design.
This Instruction Manual is also available in the following other languages:
German Order-No.: 6SC6600-78800
French Order-No.: 6SC8600-78D00

CAUTION
‘The boards contain components which are sensitive to electrostatic
discharge. The human body must be electrically discharged before an
electronic board is touched. This can be simply done by touching a
conductive, grounded abject immediately beforehand (e.g. grounded
power panel components, socket outlet protective conductor contact).

1.1 Application
‘SIMODRIVE 660 main spindle transistor PWM inverters are used, in conjunction with 1PH AC.
induction motors, for main spindle machine tool drives. They control the speed of the drive in
4-quadrant operation, and fulfill the highest demands regarding the dynamic control response,
1.2 Mode of operation
The open-loop and closed-loop control of the AC main spindle drive is partially digital
(microprocessor-based), and partially implemented per hardware, It consists of a speed
controller with series ramp-function generator and a current controller. The current controller
output is pulse-width modulated. The frequency, amplitude and phase of the motor voltage is
precisely generated by the inverter, so that the required torque and magnetic field are
obtained, taking into account the torque and field limits.
‘The speed actual value is sensed using an encoder on the motor shaft whose signals are
transmitted to the N1 contro! board where they are evaluated.

= External heat dissipation, complete
With this version, the air cooling circuit for the power section is separated from the
inside of the machine tool cubicle. The power section heat loss in this case must not
be taken into account when calculating the heat dissipation measures for the cubicle.
Further, contaminated cooling air is filtered. The incorporated standard filter mat,
filers particles with a diameter > 5 um.
= External heat dissipation through the connecting flange
The equipment consists of a connecting flange on the air cooling circuit for the power
section. This allows the power section heat loss to be dissipated through an air
cooling circuit at the installation,
The connecting flange is always mounted for the 6SC6620 unit.
‘© Retrofit set 6SC6600-5AD00
Resistor R601 = 100 kQ should be connected between M600 and PE for operation on
supplies with ungrounded neutral point. This prevents the unit supply voltage reaching

2 Installation
2.1 Converter mounting
The converters are designed for vertical mounting in panels or machine racks. They should be
mounted with the motor terminals toward the bottom.
It should be ensured that the cooling air intake is unrestricted. A space of 100 mm must be
maintained above and below the converters which must not be covered by cables.
‘The converters should be mounted so that they are protected from conductive dust deposits
and vapors (degree of protection DIN 4050-100).
Refer to dimension drawings for mounting dimensions

2.2 Converter connection
2.2 Converter connection
The units must be grounded in operation (cable cross-section > 10 mm2). They should be
connected according to the recommended connecting diagram and the customer's circuit
diagram,
The motor/converter adaption is realized using initialization (Sections 4 and 7).
The setpoint and actual value cables are screened, and should be
routed separately from the power cables.
A twisted cable is recommended for the motor cable
Control cables for the enable signals should be routed separately
from the contactor control cables.
noise problems occur, it is possible to connect the NC and drive
reference grounds.
The NC and the main spindle converter should be connected to
ground through the shortest possible route: Minimum cable cross-
section, 10 mm2. The connection is realized via connector X131 on
the main spindle module.
The protective conductors (PE) should be routed to 4 central
position in the cubicle (minimum conductor cross-section 25 mm2)
Contactors between the motor and converter, or supply and
converter must not be switched under load. (when opening, the
pulses must first be cancelled (terminal 63), and then 40 ms later the
contactor can be opened)
The power terminal retaining screws should be checked to ensure
that they are tight.
The retaining screws between the subrack front panels (S1, N1, G1
and N2) and the subrack should be checked to ensure they are tight.
2.2.1. Screen connection
The cable screens of the motor- and spindle encoder cables should be connected to the
screen bar (refer to Section 3.2).

Function description

© Terminal 64:
© Terminal 81
© Terminal 111
© Terminal 6:
Inverter enable (motor control), is realized when terminal 63 (pulse enable)
and terminal 64 (controller enable) are energized (24 V). If the pulse
enable is withdrawn while the motor is rotating (0 V}, the inverter is
inhibited and the motor coasts down under a no-current condition.
Controller enable
The inverter enable is realized when terminals 63 and 64 are energized. If
the controller enable is withdrawn when the motor is rotating, the drive
brakes along the ramp-function generator ramp. When the absolute actual
speed falls below the mn threshold (P-022), the inverter is inhibited and
the motor braked down to standstill without overshoot.
Ramp-function generator fast stop
‘The speed setpoint is enabled if 24 V is connected to terminal 81. The
speed setpoint is digitally set to zero when 0 V is connected. The drive
brakes without the ramp-function generator at the torque limit (refer to P-
053 bit 1, Section 6.3.9).
2nd torque limit
Refer to Section 5.3.8
Ramp-function generator bypass
if 24 Vis connected to terminal 62, the internal ramp-function generator is
bypassed (refer to Section 5.3.5).

Function description
‘© Terminals 72 to 74: Readyino fauit relay
The relay function can be changed-over using P-053
Refer to Section 5.3.9 for explanation.
© Terminals 127, 128: Relay n= sot
The relay puls-n, if the speed actual value reaches the setpoint
taking into account the tolerance bandwidth set in P-027,
Speed fluctuations due to load changes do not cause the relay to
drop-out ~
2.2.5 General information
If external 24 V sources are used (enable sigals), the ground potential of these external
voltages must be connected to the reference potential (terminal 19).
When using NC controls with non-floating electronic outputs, terminal 19 must be connected
to the NC reference potential.
771 mpi NC Normally closed contact NO Normally open contact
2) Freoly-programmabie ve operator contol parameters (Section 5)
2) When several relay are used, the otal current must not exceed 1A ~
