Water Tank Design per BS 8007 & 8110

The document provides calculations for the design of a rectangular water tank with the following dimensions: 4260mm x 1500mm x 1575mm. It includes calculations for: 1) Design of the tank walls to withstand water pressure from the tank. Reinforcement required is determined to be 10 bars of 10mm diameter steel bars spaced at 150mm. 2) Serviceability limit state checks for crack width control of the tank walls. Calculations show the crack widths will be less than the maximum allowable of 0.2mm. 3) Deflection checks which show the calculated deflection is less than the allowable limit. So the tank wall design satisfies the structural and serviceability requirements.

1) Elastic Design

This method is based on working loads, and permissible stresses in the concrete and steel
which are considered to be acting within the elastic range. Hence the design assumes a
triangular stress block. The ratio (αe) of the modulus of elasticity of steel to that of concrete
is taken as 15.
Calculations are performed on the basis of two criteria : strength, and resistance to cracking,
with exposure class related to allowable crack widths.

Design by elastic method, therefore, consists of designing for strength, checking cracking
resistance, and increasing the member size or area of reinforcement, if necessary.
