MINISTRY OF EDUCATION

SUMMARY OF MORALS AND VALUES EDUCATION PRIMARY

CURRICULUM
Rationale

Morals and Values education is fundamentally about making meaning of life in all its
dimensions. This implies that certain civic and moral values enshrined in religious
beliefs, international conventions and declarations must be made part and parcel of
education in order to provide meaning beyond the mere teaching of abstractions.
Students must also be taught to reason and make responsible moral and ethical
decisions. Teachers must find ways to mainstream the social concerns of our age -
literacy, gender equality, HIV/AIDS- into their teaching and daily interaction with young
people.

Goals

The Morals and Values Education Curriculum seeks to help students to lead personally
satisfying and socially constructive lives through

 Internalization and adoption of the ideals and values held dear by society

 developing the skills of moral reasoning and responsible decision making

Content

The Morals and Values Education Curriculum provides opportunities for inculcating
traditional values as well as for exploring the meaning and significance of a wide range
of values (spiritual, aesthetic, economic, ecological, cultural scientific, political) and their
contribution to the quality of life through the following themes

The Promotion of Rationality

The Development of Empathy
The Fostering of Empowerment and Self-Esteem
Developing and Furthering Cooperation

opportunities for clarifying and internalizing values to support responsible decision
