INSTRUCTIONS

Exercise your conscience. Read the sample cases above. Analyze each case by doing the following:

1. Name the basic human values that need to be protected or upheld.

2. Name the sin being committed? What makes it a sin in the context of the case given?

3. Discern and identify, according to your conscience, the specific good you are obliged to do (or the
specific evil you need to avoid) in each case.

Case 1: The Wrong Bill

You and your friends have just dined in an expensive restaurant. When you inspect the bill, you notice
that the waiter forgot to charge your table one main entrée you ordered that cost PHP 250.00. Your friend
Matthew tells all of you to keep quiet about the mistake. What will you do?

Case 1: The Wrong Bill

1. Basic Human values to be upheld.

The basic human value that needs to be upheld is honesty.

2. Specific good you are obliged to do

My friends and I are obligated to tell the truth and pay the 200 peso bill.

3. Specific evil to shun or avoid

We should avoid being dishonest. Lying is bad because it diminishes trust between human beings. If
people generally did not tell the truth, life then would become very difficult because no one could be
trusted.

4. Name the specific Sin

The sin that is about to be committed in this situation is lying.

5. Why is it a sin?

It is a sin because not telling the truth could jeopardize the restaurant’s business. It could also cost the
waiter his job. Therefore, it is not kind to hide what you know, especially when it is at someone’s
expense.

Case 2: Text Victim

Marcy, your classmate, recently became the victim of cyberbullying when an unknown individual spread
a malicious text message about her to members of the school community, including teachers and
administrators. The text message falsely depicted her as promiscuous, untrustworthy, and two-faced. As
Marcy’s friend, you know that these are all false. During recess, you overhear another classmate, Gina,
telling another classmate that she was the one who sent the malicious text message to teach Marcy a
lesson. What will you do?

Case 2: Text Victim

1. Basic Human values to be upheld.

The basic human value to be upheld is friendship.

2. Specific good you are obliged to do

I am obligated to tell Marcy what I know, especially if that piece of information could help her. After
that, we will proceed and let the responsible adults handle the situation.

3. Specific evil to shun or avoid

We should not do any form of bullying as it can hurt others physically or emotionally. As Marcy’s friend
it is my duty to not tolerate it and watch it happen. I must report Gina so she could be held accountable
for what she did to Marcy.

4. Name the specific Sin

The sin committed in this situation is cyberbullying.

5. Why is it a sin?

This is a sin because it violates God’s greatest commandment for humanity: love thy neighbour. It
encloses all the commandments that deal with not damaging ourselves and others.
