1. List out the applications of composite materials.
2. What is orthotropic material?
3. Differentiate neutral axis and arbitrary axis.
4. What is the number of independent elastic constants required to characterize the following class of materials:

5. Write the advantages and disadvantages of Tsai-hill failure theory.
6. Define quasi-isotropic laminate.
7. Differentiate open mould and closed mould processes with examples.
8. List out the different types of resin materials.
9. Distinguish between face dimpling and face crippling.
10. Name any five components of aircraft where sandwich panels are used.

G31= 7.0GPa. How can the stiffness matrix for the same lamina be determined?
ii) A unidirectional lamina with continuous fibers at Ө=600 to the x-axis has the following properties: E1= 14 6
GPa, E2=3.5 GPa, v12=0.4 and G12= 4.2 GPa. The lamina is subject to the following stresses: σ X=-3.5
MPa, σ y= 7.0 MPa and Txy= -1.4 GPa. Compute the stresses and strains with respect to the principal
material directions.

GPa and σ1u= 2.94 GPa). What fraction of the load is carried by fibers in the composites?

E2=15Gpa v12=0.28 G12=5Gpa.

16 Find the stiffness matrices [A], [B], [D], for 3 ply(0/30/60) Graphite epoxy lamina using
a) classical lamina theory .Assume E1=175Gpa E 2=23Gpa v12=0.28 G12=12Gpa and each ply
having thickness of 5mm.

b) A thin walled cylindrical pressure vessel is to be designed for maximum strength using glass
fiber/epoxy prepegs using filament winding. Outline the design principles involved in the design of the
pressure vessel. Use any one of the failure criteria for design.
