BELLADONNA

BELLADONNA

Common name: Deadly nightshade,Common dwale


Botanical name: Atropha Belladonpa Linn.
Family: Solanaceae
Indian names: Angurshafa,Sagangur [Hindi]
Description: Erect,branched,perennial herb, 60-90. high. Leaves brownish green,
narrow at both ends. Flowers yellowish brown,bell-shaped. Fruit round, about 1.5
cm across, purple-black.
History and Authority: The name Belladona originates from two Latin words,
‘Bella’, means fine or beautiful and ‘Donno’ means lady. It was used by the
famous Italinan poisoner Leucota to kill beautiful woman.
Parts used: The whole plant, two and half to three years old, when beginning to
flower, is employed for preparing mother tincture.
Sphere of Action: Nervous system, GIT, respiratory system, urinary system and
skin.
Physiological Action: Belladonna is a mydriatic, an antispasmodic, irritant,
narcotic and anodyne. In small doses it is a spinal, respriatory and cardiac
stimulant. In large doses it paralyses both voluntary and involuntary motor nerves.
Constitution: It is associated with hot, red skin, flushed face, glaring eyes,
throbbing carotids, excited mental state.
Mind : Patient lives in a world of his own, engrossed by specters and visions and
obvious to surrounding realities. hallucinations, sees monsters, hideous faces
Acuteness of all sense. Loss of consciousness, disinclined to talk.
Head: Vertigo, with falling to left side or backwards. Pain, fullness, especially in
forehead. Pin worse light, noise, jar, lying down.
Face: Red, bluish-red, hot, swollen, convulsive motion of muscles of face Facial
neuralgia.
Eyes: Pupils dilated,Diplopia,Eyes feel swellen Photophobia,Sensation as if eyes
were half closed.
Throat: Dry mouth with day throat, as if glazed. Angry – looking congestion; red
worse on right side Tonsils enlarged; throat feels constricted; difficult deglutition
worse by liquids. Sensation of lump in throat. Spasms in throat. Constinual
indignation to swallow. Scraping Sensation. Hyperthropy of mucous membrane.
Stomach: Loss of appetite. Aversion to meat and milk Great thirst for cold water.
Abdomen: Distended, hot. Transverse colon protrudes like a pad. Stool is thin,
green, in lumps like chalk.
Urine: Retention of urine. Urine is Scanty, with tensesmus, dark and turbid.
Frequent and profuse urination.
Female: Sensation as if all viscera would protrude at genitals. Dryness and heat of
vagina. Menses increase, bright red, too early, too profuse. Menses and lochia very
offensive and hot.
Respiratory system: Dryness of nose, larynx, trachea, Tickling, short, dry cough
worse at night. Cough is barking, whooping cough, with pain in stomach before
attack.
Skin: Dry and hot, swollen, sensitive; Glands swollen, tender, red, Boils.
Suppurating wounds.
Modalities:

<jar > tight bandage
< noise > complete rest
< afternoon > hard pressure
< lying down
Relation:
Antidote: by comphora, Coffea, Opium, Aconite
Complementary: Calcarea
Incompatible: Acetic acid
