URBAN AGRICULTURE
Urban agriculture is one of the answers to food scarcity in the country and its
wide range of agricultural activities can help eases the food needs of the growing
population as it can be done in our homes, rooftops, backyards, community garden, and
more. It has a lot of benefits in the health and well-being of the population. In doing the
activity, I realized that urban agriculture is fun, and it can be a good way to build
friendship and camaraderie if done in a community setting. Aside from the benefits of
urban agriculture to ourselves, it is also beneficial to our environment. With proper
dissemination of information and sustainable programs in urban agriculture, it will be a
norm to produce healthy, organic foods.
As simple as it may seem, growing crops are much harder if you have finite
knowledge about agriculture and cultivating plants. The first step will always be the
hardest in every task. The first thing that you need to know is what are crops can
survive in your urban gardens, and you need to take into consideration the temperature
and the soil where you will plant your crops. You need to have even simple knowledge
about what fertilizers to use and the side effects of using organic and synthetic
fertilizers. By cultivating your plants, you know that there are no harmful pesticides and
fertilizers used in your plants that can potentially harm your well-being. Urban
agriculture helps the community by creating a green space in urban areas where plants
trap carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and then produce oxygen. Aside from our
health, it can also address the health issues in our community like obesity and
malnutrition and promote public health by having locally produce plants. Urban
agriculture is eco-friendly as it reduces carbon emissions via reducing the fuels used for
process, transports, and selling crops from farmlands to rural areas. It has a lot of
benefits that will hopefully create a domino effect and create a more sustainable
environment.
It may be hard at first, but it will be a part of your daily routine that will give you
ease in doing activities related to urban agriculture. It will also be a fulfilling experience
seeing your crops slowly growing each day. During this pandemic, many plantitas and
plantitos emerged in planting ornamental plants to use as a decoration in their homes
and ready to spend a huge amount of money for a single plant. I realized that by having
a good program in urban agriculture we can educate many people in having their
garden and plant crops aside from just having ornamental plants at homes. We can
inform them about the benefits of urban agriculture to a person, the community, and the
environment, in addition, we can teach them how to grow crops and maintain them.
Moreover, instead of distributing fertilizers, teach them how to compost and composting
can help lessen the waste in the community. Urban agriculture should a norm for
everyone to promote an environmental community.
