LETTER
For the past two years, I've always looked
forward to the alluring pull of summer vacation,
and more often than not had a month or two
booked for a trip to a nearby country.

Due to the sudden and unexpected standstill

brought on by COVID and the pandemic, there
has been no fun trips or events to look forward
to since the past year. With no assurance of if
and when this pandemic will end, planning for
any kind of travel seems like a far-off dream.

Still, I wouldn't want you to flush all those

fantasies of walking down the (airplane) aisle
down the drain. So, we dedicate this issue to
those who crave to wander. To travel and feel
the ground beneath their feet and the wind in
their hair and the world just a few steps away.

This goes out to you. Keep wandering.

the reality of
travelling
WRITTEN BY SAMANTHA TABIJE

Let’s be real here: nothing feels better than knowing you’ve been

booked a flight to one of your dream destinations, counting down the

days until you’re packing your suitcase at three in the morning, a

week away from your departure because you’re just that excited.

Travelling is a luxury that only comes once in a blue moon for some

people, and for me, it’s every bit of a miracle.

As much as it is packaged in a I would never have expected to run

pesos for three dishes, or even get

lost at Disneyland, of all places.

wanderlust 57
For example, I took these lovely

photos of the sunset at Disney Sea,

but behind the camera I was in

distress, because it had been an hour

since I'd lost contact with my family. I

didn’t have any wi-fi with me, and I

circled nearly the whole park trying to

look for them, only to spot a fellow

Filipina and borrow their phone to

call my aunt. I was in near tears

talking to her, especially since she

gave me an earful about wandering

off on my own. I was met with yet

another stern talking-to when we had

reunited, but I was so shaken from the

thought of not being able to go home

that I just said sorry and kept quiet.

wanderlust 58
Another photo I took was of this ice cream I had

bought on our first night. It looks pretty and all, but

the reality was we were exhausted from walking all

over Akihabara, and when we got back to the Airbnb,

my feet were blistering. Learn from my mistake:

always wear socks, and never wear tight shoes.

I wasn’t able to take a picture during this, but on our

third night in Tokyo, we went to Shibuya to do a little

shopping. Five hours later, we’re each carrying three

shopping bags, walking all the way to our Airbnb

because we lost track of time and missed the last

train of the night. We walked for about an hour and a

half, until we gave in and hailed a taxi. Safe to say

we learned our lesson from that day on and always

got home on time.

But please, don’t take our run-ins with misfortune as

a sign not to travel. If anything, let it be a sign to

travel! At the time, I was tired, terrified, and just

wanted to go home. But now, I’m glad I have these

silly stories to tell my friends and other people. These

experiences are exactly that: experiences! Things

that you can never duplicate, events that can mould

you into a better person, or simply just leave a lasting

impression on you.

With travelling, there’s never really a sure thing, other

than the fact that you’ll come back a different

person than you were before you left. You’ll come

back with stories to tell and memories that’ll stick to

you like glue. These things--these memories and

stories and experiences-- they’re unique to you. Sure,

anyone can go to Japan or South Korea or any other

country, but none of them will experience it the way

you did.

That’s the magic of travelling, on the

surface, it seems like everyone is

doing the same thing. But look a little

deeper, and you’ll see that we’re all

going through something different,

something special to us, and us

alone.
