&hdl_man_1=Payload advantage&
&txt_man_1_1=Efficient measures have been implemented in the D20 common rail engine
range to guarantee a low weight. In direct comparison with the preceding D2866
engine range this has led to a weight reduction of about 100 kg. The dry weight of
the D20 common rail engine is up to 200 kg less than that of comparable engines of
competitors.&
&txt_man_1_2=The lower engine weight is to the direct advantage of the payload
capacity. It leads to greater overloading security on the front axle. In particular
for tankers and dry-bulk transporters this translates into ready cash.&
&sum_2=Short-block engine&
&hdl_man_2=Short-block engine&
&txt_man_2_1=Various design features have been decisive in achieving the low short-
block engine weight. In comparison with the preceding D2866 range the smaller
distance between the cylinders and the lower capacity of the D20 common rail engine
have led to a more compact design and hence a lighter engine block.&
&txt_man_2_2=The thickness of the material of the components has been precisely
adapted to the individual local stresses and strains by using the finite elements
method, a computer simulation system for calculating strength and component design.
In areas with lower loads it has been possible to efficiently reduce wall
thicknesses and thus save weight.&
&txt_man_2_3=Use of lightweight materials has resulted in further savings:
Examples are the valve covers, the covers on the oil module and fuel service
centre, the entire poly-V belt drive and the plastic piping in the coolant and fuel
circuits.
The EGR housing, the high-pressure pump housing, the engine housing, the charge air
pipes, the coolant elbow, the thermostat housing, the EDC control unit and the
flywheel housing, for example, are all made of aluminium.
The special cast iron GJV-450 proved to be particularly suitable for the crankcase.
The high strength of this vermicular casting opens up ways of reducing wall
thicknesses.&
&sum_3=Add-on components&
&hdl_man_3=Add-on components&
&txt_man_3_1=In the add-on parts and the engine periphery there was still potential
for weight savings for the new engine.
The integration of the functions in the oil filter housing and in the fuel service
centre has meant that components could be combined. The oil filter housing combines
the oil filter, oil cooler and oil separator for the crankcase gases. The hand
pump, pre- and main filter element are grouped together in the fuel service centre.
The smaller overall number of individual parts has also led to a reduction in the
weight.&
&txt_man_3_2=Use of new versions of proven attachments such as the compressor and
starter motor also helped to save weight. The considerably lighter single-cylinder
compressor delivers air at the same rate as the two-cylinder compressor in the
D28.&
