Review the resource efficiency targets provided in Assessment task 2 and the related actions
you created for each target in your implementation plan.
Sydney Opera house focuses on theatre and performance. It opted to adopt sustainable
practices in its activities. The environmental sustainability plan covers the following aspects:
Use resources efficiently and responsibly

Enterprise Strategy, guiding our plans to ensure the Opera House retains its essential role in

The Sydney Opera house embodies beauty, inspiration and the liberating power of art and
ideas. It is a masterpiece that belongs to all Australians. We will treasure and renew the
Opera house for future generations of artists, audiences and visitors. Everything we do will
engage and inspire people through its excellence, ambition and breadth. We will strengthen
our central role in Australia’s life and identity.
Goals
The Access Strategic Plan has been developed with a focus on Sydney Opera House’s
strategic goals:
Artistic Excellence Produce and present imaginative and engaging performing arts events
from Australia and around the world.

Earning Our Way remains relevant, contemporary and leverages our position as a critical
tourism and cultural asset.
According to the Sydney Opera House Environmental Sustainability Policy statement, the
mission has been proposed to concentrate more on providing different green environmental
for future generations of artist, audiences and visitors. On the other hand, the organization
also promotes inspiration and art encouragement to centralize the Australia’s life and
identity. To achieve a green environment as proposed, different facilities has been planned
and developed. On the other hand, different restaurants, theatre bars and two retail stores
must comply also with these policies to accomplish the Opera House’s legacy as a leader in
environmental sustainability commitment in Australia.
Eventually, this report focuses on management review based on the sustainable
performance. The policy has the purpose to have responsibility and contribution to
conserving natural resources, minising waste and pollution, and enhancing the natural
environment. The outcomes of these actions are to improve the Opera House’s status as an
Australian leading symbol of environmental and social sustainability. However, there are
some shortfalls and needed to implement and continuously develop.
Using the data provided and the corporate information available to you, develop a written
report that includes:

In its plan Sydney opera house has achieved certain success. This has moved the company
ahead with regard to its sustainability project. With success, shortfalls are always imminent.
We will tackle both the success and the shortfalls the company has achieved.

Sydney opera house has achieved the following success from the time it instituted the
sustainability policy.
Undertaking a carbon footprint of its activities establishing its carbon profile and identity
actions.
Included the environmental sustainable event management within its outdoor event guide.
Completion of the sustainability advantage modules, staff engagement.
Creation of the greening the house brand to drive green house sustainability in the house.
Recognizing staff who have taken the initiative and driven the opera house sustainability.
Opera has reduced the operating hours of sail, lighting, switching off the lights for around an
extra 4 hours.
Creation of a video to educate the staff on where waste goes and the importance of
recycling.
Changed the older pumps, chillers and motors with new efficient ones to deal with
improving conditioning system.
These are among the success that the Sydney opera house has achieved from the day they
instituted the sustainability policy. The other aspects of this achievement are the shortfalls
that the Sydney house has faced in its endeavor. They include;
Lack of a conclusive standards and effective methods of assigning and measuring value to
the company's ecological impact.
Getting the necessary support from NGO'S, government and institutions in its sustainability
plan.
Limited finances in implementing the plan to its utmost success.
Resistance of some suppliers in adopting sustainability policy in their practices as the Sydney
opera house requirements.
Difficulty in fully incorporating the sustainability plan to be in tune with its corporate culture.

The above shortfalls have directed our focus on trends that may require remedial action. For
the sustainability plan to succeed the following trends need to be improved on continually in
the future. The trends requiring remedial action include:
Data accessibility by stakeholders.
Stakeholders having more access to sustainable data this will be achieved through:
Alignment of real time decision making process with their communication on climate
change.
Involvement of representatives from the stakeholders to proffer their ideas with regard to
sustainability.
Partnership and government support
Companies that support the same initiatives coming together to aid in lowering the cost.
Sharing of ideas
Support of research with regard to sustainability.
Use of technology.
Technology utilization in every aspect of the sustainability plan it includes;
Data technology will result in greater transparency.
System technology will speed up the process of carrying out sustainability.
Equipment and facility technology will result in efficiency of sustainability.

The Sydney opera house has adopted the key performance index as a way of measuring its
sustainability policies. The plan they adopted is not in entirety error free but is what is
commonly used by companies. We have different key performance index depending on the
factor being measured, this has clearly been brought out in the assessment 2.With regard to
record keeping the company has adopted technologies that ensured that there is an
integrated manner of accessing and maintaince of records.
Recommendations for improvements to policy, communication and management of
sustainability based on data taken from analysis of records.
Having the management support the sustainability plan fully.
Precisely elaborating and explaining the case of change into sustainability.
Ensuring that the staffs are all involved in the plan by them contributing ideas and
implementation of the sustainability policy.

Conclusion
An in depth view of the report has clearly outlined, the origins of the sustainability plan in
Sydney opera house. We have discussed the success and shortfalls that the company has
faced in its implementation process. The report has also featured trends that will ensure
continuous improvement of the Sydney opera house sustainability from now and into the
future. The application of the recommendations suggested in the report will also assist the
company in achieving tremendous success in its environmental sustainability plan.
Charts of resource usage within the Sydney Opera House
For the periods 2006-2012
Annual electricity use
Reduce energy use. This entails reducing energy electricity by Circuit breaker retrofit.
Electricity network and network system availability Gas odor complain and gas leak repair
response in Baseline year 2006/2012. The target is 15% reduction by June. To introduce
rechargeable batteries in radio microphone. To introduce reusable water bottles provided to
all vivid live performers.
Monthly electricity use
Electricity use at Sydney Opera House decreased by 2% through implementing energy
efficiency upgrades. Sydney Opera House includes all operations on Bennelong Point
including Food and Beverage Tenancies and Major Construction (VAPS).
Annual Gas Use
Gas use at the Opera House is limited to Food and Beverage tenants. We work with tenants
to help ensure efficient and responsible use of resources. Increases in gas use in 2006/2012
were in part due to the use of accurate data. Malfunctioning gas meters were repaired in
FY09/10, FY11/12.
Monthly gas use
Gas figures for 2006/12 are an estimate due to a malfunctioning meter which shows a
significant decrease in gas consumption that may not be correct. The figure is also likely
incorrect due to this issue. The gas meter fault has been reported. The pipe leak has been
repaired
Annual water use
Water use has reduced by 8% from the previous year, however is 6% higher than the
baseline year (2005/06)., contributed to the increased result against the baseline. Significant
effort will be put into early detection of leaks and achieving the 15% reduction on the
baseline year over 2012/13.
Monthly water use
The ESP 2006/2012 set a target of 15% reduction in water use (on Jan 09/ Jul 09). However,
water use had increased by 46% at year end, due to inefficiencies in the air-conditioning
system. Building Development and Maintenance investigated the air-conditioning system
and found a cost-effective solution
