Assignment #2
Spring 2020-21
Instructor: Nowshin Alam
Due Date: May 01, 2021.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Consider, your ID = AB-CDEFG-H. If the digits of your ID form 00 in any case, then use 10.
Note: Copied/identical submissions will be graded as 0 for all parties concerned.
1. Describe the process of viewing a secure web page using TCP/IP model, and draw the data link layer
frame showing all the Source and Destination values in the headers of different layers during the following
steps:
My computer
Router Web Server
• Computer ->Router 1
• Router 1 -> Web server
• Web server ->Router 1
• Router 1 -> Computer
Assume CDEF as the port opened by the browser in the computer, default HTTPS port for the web server,
and use randomly generated IP and MAC addresses (check out this link for IP and this link for MAC).
You can assume the computer and server are in the same network. [3+2]
2. We have four sources, each creating CDE characters per second. If the interleaved unit is (G+H) bytes
long and 1 synchronizing bit is added to each frame, find [5]
a) the data rate of each source,
b) the frame rate,
c) the duration of each frame,
d) the number of bits in each frame,
e) the data rate of the link.
3. For frequency modulated radios, the FCC uses β = 4. A total of 100 possible FM channels (stations) are
allowed carrier frequencies anywhere between 88 Mhz and 108 MHz. [1+2+2]
a) What is FM bandwidth BFM?
b) To create even more privacy, the FCC requires that in a given area, only alternate bandwidth
allocations may be used, meaning after every station, the next channel remains unused to prevent
any possibility of two stations interfering with each other. Under these conditions, choose a station
channel frequency 88 MHz + [(E+H) x 200] kHz. Plot the frequency range of the station and the
next allowed station.
c) Calculate the maximum frequency of the message signal that is being frequency modulated,
indicated by the bandwidth B.
4. For data multiplexing over a link, you have been given the following requirements while choosing the
appropriate coding:
a) Four digital data channels, each transmitting at CDE Mbps.
b) Satellite channel of BEF MHz
c) Frequency division multiplexing
Design and draw an appropriate configuration. While choosing digital to analog modulation, choose the
next closest number for number of bits (i.e. if r = bit rate/symbol rate gives 3.67, use a modulation scheme
that uses 4 bits per symbol. For r <1 you may choose a modulation scheme that uses 1 bit per symbol). [5]
5. Identify the type of switching network in the below picture and calculate the total delay if Transmission
time = BD miliseconds, propagation time = GH/10 miliseconds and Waiting time = AC/20 miliseconds
for each switch. Ignore processing delay. [2+3]
6. Draw the constellation diagrams of 16 PSK and 16 QAM, assuming the same peak amplitude value
for both. Compare the 2 modulation schemes based on noise immunity (hint: based on point-to-point
distance), average transmitted signal power (hint: based on amplitude) and cost. [2+3]
