Perfect Square and Perfect Cubes
The square root of a number is the solution of the equation x2 = a. Every positive number a
has two square roots: the positive square root, √a, called the principal square root, and the negative
square root, -√a. oftentimes, this is written as x=√ a to represent the 2 roots this is read as,
x equals plus and minus the square root of a.
Illustrative Examples
A. Solve: x2 = 64
x2 = 64
x = ± √64
x =±8

B. Solve: 4x2 +16=0 this equation has no real solution

x2+4=0 because a < 0
x2 = -4
-4 has no real square roots.

The cube root of a number a is the solution of the equation x3=a it is denoted by 3√a

Illustrative Examples
A. Solve: x3=27
x3=27
x=3√27
x=3

B. Solve: 2x3-16=0
2x3-16=0
x3-8=0
x3 = 8
x3=3√8
x=2

Product of Rational Algebraic Expressions
The product of two rational algebraic expressions is also a rational algebraic expression.
The numerator of the product is the product of numerator in the given Rational Algebraic
Expression and the denominator of the product is the product of the denominators of the given
Rational Algebraic expression.

Illustrative Examples:
Give the product in its simplest form.

A. 2y . 4x = 2x . 2x = 8x2 Multiply the numerator and

5y . 7y 5y.7y 35y2 the denominators.

B. 4a2 . 5b2 = 4a2 . 5b2 = 20a2b2= 4a2b.5b Factor in such a way that one factor is common
ab 12a ab . 12a 12a2b 4a2b.3 to both the numerator and the denominator

C. x . x2+4y+3= y . (x+1) (x+3)= y . (x+1) (x+3)= x+3 Factor each rational expression
xy . x2-1 xy . (x+1) (x-1) xy . (x+1) (x-1) y(x-1) before multiplying use cancellation
