Question 2 [20]
A microprocessor company is having difficulty with its current yields. Silicon processors are
made on a large die, cut into pieces, and each one is tested to match specifications. The
company has requested that you run experiments to increase processor yield. The factors
that affect processor yields are temperature, pressure, doping amount, and deposition rate.
The details of parameters and their levels are given in the filled-in selected orthogonal array,
as shown in the Table below, with experimental combinations and corresponding values of
response yield.
*The response data was collected by conducting three ‘3’ trials T1 T2 T3
Expt Temperatur Pressur Doping Depositio Response
No. e e Amount n Rate T1 T2 T3
1 100 2 4 0.1 87.3 82.3 70.7
2 100 5 6 0.2 74.8 70.7 63.2
3 100 8 8 0.3 56.5 54.0 45.7
4 150 2 6 0.3 79.8 78.2 62.3
5 150 5 8 0.1 77.3 76.5 54.0
6 150 8 4 0.2 89.0 87.3 83.2
7 200 2 8 0.2 64.8 62.3 55.7
8 200 5 4 0.3 99.0 93.2 87.3
9 200 8 6 0.1 75.7 74.0 63.2
Calculate the S/N ratios for all experiments and further evaluate the ranks and determine the
most significant parameter affecting the response.
Question 3 [20]
a. With the help of an example briefly discuss hypothesis testing. [5]
2
b. What is the significance of randomization and replication in design of experiments?
[5]
c. The temperatures, in Celsius, at three locations in the engine of a vehicle are
measured after each of five test runs. The data are as follows- [10]
Location Run 1 Run 2 Run 3 Run 4 Run 5
A 72.8 77.3 82.9 69.4 74.6
B 71.5 72.4 80.7 67.0 74.0
C 70.8 74.0 79.1 69.0 75.4
Making the usual assumptions for a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) without
replication, test the hypothesis that there is no systematic difference in temperatures
between the three locations. Use the 5% level of significance.
