What’s New

World View Note: The first set of rules for working with negatives
came from 7th century India. However, in 1758, almost a
thousand years later, British mathematician Francis Maseres
claimed that negatives “Darken the very whole doctrines of the
equations and make dark of the things which are in their nature
excessively obvious and simple.” Thus Absolute Value came out.

4
What Is it

 A solution of an absolute-value inequality is a value of the

variable that makes the absolute-value inequality true.
 Solution sets are written in set notation using braces, { }.
Solutions may be given in set notation, or they may be given
in the form x = a certain real number.

The inequalities you have seen so far are simple inequalities. When
two simple inequalities are combined into one statement by the words AND or
OR, the result is called a compound inequality.

When an inequality contains an absolute-value expression, it can be

written as a compound inequality.
The inequality h 爠 describes all real numbers whose distance from is
less than 爠 units.
h 爠 The solutions are all numbers between –5 and 5,
Therefore, |y|< 5 can be rewritten as –5 < y < 5, or as y > –5 AND y < 5.
The graph of |y| < 5 is illustrated below.

5
In numbers:
h 爠 The given inequality
h 㤮 爠 and y 爠 The two cases of absolute value
爠 h 爠 The compound inequality

Helpful Hints:
Just as you do when solving absolute-value equations, you first isolate the
absolute-value expression when solving absolute-value inequalities.
Steps:
1. To solve absolute-value inequalities, perform inverse operations to
isolate the absolute-value expression on one side of the equation.
2. Consider two cases the positive answer and the negative answer
reversing the inequality symbol.
3. Write the solution set in set notation.

Example 1: Solve the inequality + 14 19 and graph the solutions.

t h〱 hW Given
t h〱 hW
h〱 h〱 Subtract 14 to both sides
t 爠 Simplify
爠 Isolated absolute value
爠 爠 Two cases solution set
爠 爠 Solution set in set notation
The graph of the solution set

Checking: Let’s take the values -5 and 5 by substituting into the original
inequality
t h〱 hW t h〱 hW
爠 t h〱 hW 爠 t h〱 hW
爠 t h〱 hW X ណ 爠 t h〱 hW X ណ

Example 2: Solve the inequality and graph the solutions.

6
h t Given inequality
h t and h t Two cases
th th th th Add 1 to both sides of the inequality
t and t h Simplify
3 and h Two cases solution set
h h Solution set in set notation
The graph of the solution set

Notice that the graph is inclusive from -1 to 3, (bounded by solid red

circles) this means that values from h to t are the only solutions of
the inequality.

Example 3: Solve the inequality and graph the solutions.

h h Given inequality
h h Since 3 is subtracted from h , add 3
t t
to both sides to undo the subtraction.
h t t Simplify
h t Isolated absolute value inequality
h t h 㤮 t Solutions in two cases
hh t h t Solution set in set notation
The graph of the solution set

Notice that the graph is bounded by red empty circles from t to t t, this
means that values between t and t t are the only solutions to the
inequality h h. The values -2 and 2 are NOT solutions to the
inequality.

Example 4: Solve the inequality and graph the solutions.

7
t The given inequality

t Since z is multiplied by 2 divide

t t both sides by 2
Isolated absolute value
Solutions in two cases
h Solution set in set notation
The graph of the solution set

When solving an absolute value inequality, you may get a statement that is
true for all values of the variable. In this case, all real numbers are solutions of
the original inequality. If you get a false statement when solving an absolute-
value inequality, the original inequality has no solutions. Its solution set is ø.

Example 5: Solve the inequality

t t W Given inequality
t t W
W W
Subtract 9 from both sides
t t t simplify
t t Absolute value is always nonnegative. Therefore, the
statement is false for all values of . This inequality has no solution. The
solution set is a null set {Ø}.
Remember: An absolute value represents a distance, and distance
cannot be less than zero.

Example 6: Solve the inequality.

h W hh Given Inequality
h W hh
tW tW
Add 9 to both sides
In this case all values y are solutions
h t
to the inequality
The solution set is all real numbers hh h
Example 7: Word Problem

8
The number, , is no more than 7 units away from 5 write and solve the
inequality to show the range of possible values of for .
Solution: 爠
Case 1: 爠 Case 2: 爠
ht t
The solution set is ht t
