Topic# Treatment of COVID-19
Brief introduction of covid-19
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a global public health concern caused by the
novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and is now known as a global pandemic.covid-19
has flu like symptoms like
• fever
• dry cough
• tiredness
• shortness of breath
• nausea
• lose of taste and smell
Treatment of covid-19
Currently there is no specific treatment for covid-19.however some treatment and
vaccine are understudy.
We can divide treatment of covid-19 into two levels
Self-care
Medical care
Self-care
A person with strong immune system and no history of any cardiovascular diseases can be
treated by self-care at home.
For self-care treatment of covid-19 a person should follow the following precautionary
measures
• Stay at home in complete isolation
• Wash hands for minimum 20 sec
• Should use sanitizers
• Avoid visiting crowded places
• Must wear a mask where social distancing is not possible
• Must cover nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing
• Isolating yourself if you notice any symptoms
• Keep the room ventilated
Medical treatment
Because there is no cure for COVID-19 at this time, medical care for coronavirus is
focused on what’s called supportive care, or treatment to support the body’s vital
organs.
In initial stages of hospitalization following treatments are given
Patient is put to ventilator so that to stabilize its breathing
Some medicines like blood thinners are given to the patient to prevent blood clotting
An antiviral medicine Remdesivir may give to the patient(Remdesivir) is the first drug
approved by the FDA for covid-19 Treatment)
Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that can help reduce the length of time on a
ventilator
Vaccines for covid-19
Vaccines are of great significance as they are the only source to fight against
the viruses. For covid-19 different vaccines are launched by different companies
Even world health organization (WHO) has launched its own vaccine COVAX.
Other known vaccines include;
Pfizer–BioNTech vaccine(mRNA based)
Moderna vaccine(mRNA based)
Johnson & Johnson vaccine(viral vector vaccine)
Oxford–AstraZeneca vaccine(viral vector vaccine)
In Phase III trials, these COVID-19 vaccines have demonstrated efficacy as high as
95% in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 infections but they also show some side
effects which last for a day or two normally but if the symptoms last for more than
two to three day then a person must consult a doctor. These vaccines do not
promise to provide long term protection because COVID vaccines have only been
developed in the past months, it’s too early to know the duration of protection of
COVID-19 vaccines.
