Baby Hatch: A Solution for Abandoned Babies?

The document discusses the issue of baby dumping in Malaysia and proposes introducing "baby hatches" as an alternative. Baby hatches are places where desperate mothers can anonymously leave their babies to be cared for rather than abandoning them. The document presents both sides of the argument, with some people arguing baby hatches prevent infant death while others argue they may promote issues like premarital sex or cause emotional challenges for babies raised not knowing their birth parents. The document includes a questionnaire to gauge opinions on whether baby hatches should be encouraged in Malaysia.

RESEARCH PROJECT : Should the ‘baby hatch’ be introduced to prevent the death of
abandoned babies?

Gender :M/F

Course :

Introduction

Baby dumping has been an issue on the rise lately. The abandoned babies face death
in a very pitiful way. Some are thrown in rubbish bins, drowned in river and even left in the
pavement which became the unfortunate prey for stray dogs. People might give various
types of reasons for the act of dumping the babies but I am pretty sure none can justify the
pathetic death of the poor innocent newborns. Hence, the ‘baby hatch’ was introduced as
an alternative to dump the babies elsewhere.
OrphanCARE, a non-governmental organization has come forward with this plan and
there has already been two baby hatches in Malaysia so far till now. This new system is
implemented for desperate mothers to drop their babies off rather than killing it. Unwed
mothers or teenage mothers normally choose this alternative to abandon their babies
where no identification is needed. All they need to do is to open the door of the ‘baby
hatch’, place the baby inside, and leave. An alarm system will alert the workers once the
door is shut and the baby will be in good hands. Then, the baby will be given up for
adoption. However, this system has both its pros and cons. This is a survey to find out your
opinion about this move.
Thank you for your cooperation.
