POPULATION PYRAMIDS

A population pyramid deals with the demographic structure of the population. It highlights

the trends in the birth rate, death rate, gender and age. This information is measured

either by percentages or in millions on the horizontal base (x axis) and the age on the

vertical axis (y axis). This allows geographers to give an estimation on the rate of growth

of a population in any place. There are 5 categories of population pyramids. They are:

 STAGE 1

DESCRIPTION: Base is wide, low life expectancy and concave profile.

This tells us that there is a rise in birth rates and in death rates which means that this

population does not have a proper education or health care system and limited access to

contraceptives or medicine. This population consists of a lot of younger people than you

will find elderly, which projects itself in the low life expectancy rating, as a Less

Economically Developed Country concluding its status of high fluctuating results.

 STAGE 2

DESCRIPTION: Base is wide, lengthening life expectancy and pyramidal profile.

This tells us that there is a rise in birth rate and considerably high death rate which

means that there is some level of education and health care along with access to

contraceptives and medicine. However it is not enough to balance the birth rate and death
rate as it is overpowered by the population’s rapid growth of births along with being a

Less Economically Developed Country concluding its status as early expansion.

 STAGE THREE

DESCRIPTION: Base is narrowing, increasing life expectancy and rocket shaped profile.

This tells us that there is a significant decline in birth rate and death rate. These countries

represented in this graph has a good education system and health care system with sure

access to medicine and vaccinations which shows in the slow population growth rate,

which also tells us that the country is a More Economically Developed Country concluding

its status as late expanding.

 STAGE FOUR

DESCRIPTION: Base is narrowing, long life expectancy and vase shaped profile.

This tells us that there is a rapid drop in birth rates and death rates. There is an

acceptable education system and health care system with access to medicine and

vaccinations which keeps the balance in population with birth rates a little higher than

death rates, which assures the status as low fluctuating growth.

 STAGE 5

DESCRIPTION: Diminishing base and very long life expectancies.

This tells us that the decline in birth rates is at a stage where it is extremely low and the

death rates are also drastically low. This population is overpowered with the elderly

population and barely any young population to replace the dead. The healthcare system
and the education system is excellent along with necessary access to medicine and

vaccinations which assures its status as population decline in ageing.

Each demographic structure defines what type of population we have either it be a young

population or an aging population. This also identifies the development of each country

and the necessary requirements needed for an improvement in population balance.
