Starch Sources for Biodegradable Plastics

This literature review examines different sources of starch that can be used to make biodegradable plastics. Biodegradable plastics were first discovered in 1926 and can be made from sources like vegetable oils, corn starch, food waste, and other starches like taro, banana peels, potatoes, and cassava. Researchers have studied which sources make biodegradable plastics with higher load capacity and tensile strength. The review discusses the advantages of reducing petroleum use and creating less waste for landfills, as well as disadvantages like contaminating biodegradable plastics if not properly segregated from other trash.

Research Title:

COMPREHENSIVE LITERATURE ON THE DIFFERENT SOURCE OF

STARCH AS BIODEGRADABLE PLASTIC

Research Problem:

This Research will determine the best source of starch to make

Biodegradable Plastic from the results of researchers done in the past.

Research Questions:

1. What are the different sources of starch as recommended by

researchers?

2. Which of these sources is best to make Biodegradable Plastic?

3. Which of these Biodegradable Plastics has a higher load capacity

and tensile strength?

Review in Related Literature

Biodegradable Plastics was discovered by Maurice Lemoigne in 1926. Maurice

Lemoigne is a French researcher. The first biodegradable plastic was called

polyhydroxybutyrate. Polyhydroxybutyrate is a polymer belonging to the polyesters

class that area of interest as bio-derived and biodegradable plastics.

Biodegradable plastic are plastics made from renewable biomass sources, such

as vegetable fats and oils, corn starch, straw, woodchips, food waste. It can also be

made from used plastic bottles and other containers using microorganisms and other

source of starch such as Taro, Banana peel, potatoes, Cassava, etc..

The Advantages of biodegradable plastic are We can reduce the usage of

petroleum supplies because the Commercially-Available plastic comes from heating and

treating oil molecules until they turn into polymers so if we use the biodegradable plastic

the usage of oil will decrease. Biodegradable plastics can also represent a significant

energy savings because Biodegradable plastics do not need fossil fuel unlike

Commercially available plastic. Also Biodegradable plastic need only less landfills

because the biodegradable plastic can be absorbed by the soil and turn it to compost or

humus. Biodegradable plastic is also good for the environment because when we make

the Biodegradable plastic, Some green house gasses and carbon is emitted.

If there are Advantages, there are disadvantages. The first is we should not mix

the biodegradable plastic to Commercially-Available because the Biodegradable plastic

will be contaminated and cannot use anymore but other people don’t segregate their

garbage so if the Biodegradable plastic is contaminated it can add to the volume of

thrash. The second is some farmers use pesticides to their crops. It can contaminate

the crop and may be included to the Biodegradable plastic so we cannot use it in food

packaging.
