Topics (L16-L21): 3-phase circuit analysis

Note: Students are required to attempt solving these problems before coming to the tutorial session. Any difficulties
in understanding the stated topics or the given examples and the related discussions would be entertained. If you find
some mistake in the answer, please notify me the corrected answer. All the best.

[1] For the circuit shown below, a two-watt meter is used to measure the average power drawn by a 3-phase 3-wire
Y-connected
√ balanced load connected to a 3-phase source. Show that the phase angle of the load impedance is given by
2 −W1
tan−1 ( 3 W
W2 +W1 ).

[2] Consider a 3-phase source with line voltage 460V is connected to a 3-phase 3-wire star-connected balanced load, where
the load consumes 8kW at a lagging power factor 0.8. Find the per phase load value. Is it capacitive/inductive?
[Ans: 16.9 + j12.66Ω, inductive]
[3] For the circuit shown below, calculate the reading of each wattmeter (W1 and W2 ) when Z = 13.44 + j46.08Ω. What
is the total power delivered to the load? Is it equal to W1 + W2 ? (Hint: you may use delta to star conversion at the
load)

[Ans: 28156.15 W, −9256.15 W, 18900 W ]

[4] As shown in the figure below, a 3-phase source with 200V line voltage is applied to a balanced 4-connected load
consisting of the groups of fifty 60W, 200V rated lamps (resistive in nature) in each phase. Calculate phase and line
currents, phases voltages, power consumption of all lamps and of a single lamp included in each phase for the following
cases : (a) under normal conditions of operation (b) after blowout in line R’R (c) after blowout in phase BY

[Ans: (a)IP = 15A, IL =26A, 3000W, 60W (b) Phase currents: 15A, 7.5A, 7.5A, Line currents: 0A, 22.5A, 22.5A,
Power/lamp/phase: 15W, 60W, 15W (c) Phase currents: 15A, 15A, 0A, Line currents: 26A, 15A, 15A,Power/lamp/phase:
60W, 60W, 0W ]
