Society's Influence on Education

Schools both reflect and shape society. Socialization is a key function of schools, as they teach students social norms and prepare them for social roles. While family is the primary agent of socialization, schools can also influence students' social development. However, schools may not be able to fully "undo" the effects of an extremely deprived home environment. Education was not universally accessible in pre-colonial Philippines, as most learning was informal and passed down orally. The National College Entrance Examination aimed to provide equal access to quality education but was abolished in 1994 to allow all high school students a chance to enter college.
