The design of electric hot water heaters includes thermostatically controlled heating elements with over temperature cut-off protection, which automatically cut off power if the preset temperature is exceeded . Additionally, the heaters are equipped with an in-built temperature and pressure relief valve set at 99°C and 1350 KN/m² (200 psi) to protect from excessive pressure . Furthermore, a safety return valve prevents the complete emptying of water in case of cold water supply interruption and releases excess pressure during heating .
The electric water heater's tank is constructed from heavy gauge low carbon steel with a thick internal coating of water-resistant vitreous enamel, or cold-rolled copper with all seams lapped and brazed for durability . The inner tank may also be made of steel protected by a glass-ceramics coating or stainless steel, enhancing resistance to corrosion . This construction ensures high durability and efficiency by preventing corrosion and heat loss, aided by a 30 mm blanket of insulation made from high-density polyurethane foam .
During electrification, it is vital to ensure that water heaters are earthed according to safety standards to prevent electrical hazards . Qualified personnel must perform all electrical connections to guarantee compliance with local codes and to safely integrate the equipment into the building's electric system . The connection of the electric supply must include safety leads and protect against overcurrent with appropriate circuit protection devices. Verification of the voltage and compatibility with the heater's design parameters (220-240V, 50 Hz) is essential to prevent electrical failures .
Electric hot water heaters manage water stagnation by ensuring pipework penetration is flashed properly to maintain watertightness and prevent stagnation around entry points . Noise generated during operation, such as hissing from boiling water, is common and managed by regular maintenance, like descaling to reduce limestone accumulation . These design and maintenance strategies keep the system efficient and avoid potential damage due to prolonged exposure to vibration or noise .
Regular maintenance of the safety valve is crucial for the safe operation of the water heater. The valve prevents excessive pressure build-up by allowing controlled pressure release, especially during heating cycles . Failure to maintain the valve can lead to pressure exceeding safety limits, risking tank rupture or system failure. Regular cleaning and inspection, particularly in areas with hard water, prevents lime scale accumulation that can obstruct valve operation, ensuring reliable protection and extending appliance lifespan .
Materials used in manufacturing electric water heaters significantly affect their performance and longevity. Tanks constructed from low-carbon steel with a vitreous enamel coating or stainless steel are resistant to corrosion, extending the lifespan . The glass-ceramic coating further protects steel tanks, minimizing rust and leaks over time . Components like heating elements made from nickel-chromium wire in copper sheaths ensure efficient heat conduction and reduced degradation due to thermal cycling . The choice of these materials directly impacts the durability and energy efficiency of the appliances.
Safe operation of electric hot water heaters requires several installation requirements: they must be mounted in locations where accidental water contact, especially from showers, is minimized . The electrical connections must be done by qualified technicians to ensure compliance with local regulations and proper grounding . For pressure control, a safety return-valve must be installed on the cold water supply pipe, with additional components like reducing valves if maximum allowable pressure is exceeded . Proper ventilation and drainage systems prevent damage and reduce the risk of water exposure to electrical parts .
Polyurethane foam insulation enhances the thermal efficiency of water heaters by providing a uniform and high-density insulating layer that minimizes heat loss from the water tank . With a density exceeding 40 kg/m³, this insulation maintains the stored water's temperature, reducing the energy required for reheating and subsequently conserving electricity . Additionally, using an environment-friendly, CFC- and HCFC-free PU formula promotes sustainability while maintaining effective insulation performance .
Electric hot water heaters must withstand specific water pressure levels to function safely and effectively. They are designed to withstand water supply pressures of up to 1100 kN/m², with temperature and pressure relief valves set higher (1350 KN/m²), protecting the system from excessive pressure that could damage the unit . These pressure specifications determine the structural integrity of the tank and the positioning and function of safety components like the non-return valve, which must ensure the system can handle sudden changes without failure .
The TESY water heater's PISTON effect improves hot water efficiency by controlling the mixing of incoming cold water with the hot water in the tank, thereby optimizing water stratification . This design allows the heater to deliver up to 8.5% more usable hot water without additional energy consumption, as it minimizes rapid cooling of the stored hot water when new cold water is introduced . This results in longer availability of hot water at the desired temperature, enhancing user experience and reducing energy waste.
