INTRODUCTION
The 1980's was a disconcerting period for lovers of
straightforward, no-nonsense hard rock. Itseemed as
though their music was rapidly becoming an endan-
‘gered species. Hard rock was threatened with extinc-
tion by saccharine power-pop bids for chart suprem-
acy, technically focused *neo-classic/chops" rock (and
its attendant guitar-hero premise) and that most indi-
vidualistic, rebellious form, heavy metal, which was
frequently twisted into a parody of itselt: overstylized,
self-conscious, formulated and often too predictable.
As the decade drew to a close, a new breed of rocker
emerged. Like the classic “rodent-mammal” in the
twilight of the dinosaur era, this new entry into the field
seemedto possess thenecessary quailties or survival:
toughness, resilience and aggressiveness.
‘The new rock is distinguished by an ever-present,
underlying blues feeling (the storytelling element)
married to the rebellion and nonconformity of rock 'n"
rola common denominator among Elvis, Chuck
Berry, The Beatles, The Stones, Aerosmith and ACY
DC. The Sea Hags' 1989 release, SEA HAGS, is one
of he newest offerings in this idiom and captures some
Of its most definitive features succinctly—in concept,
mood and execution.
‘The concept is guitar-based, built on the solid, rif
oriented styles of vocalisvguitarist Ron Yocum and
guitarist Frankie Wilsey. Their economical rhythmic
approaches allow for a well-constructed two-guitar
interaction which isindigenous to the music. This result
canbe heard atthe end of the choruses in “Doghouse,”
where the opening rhythm idea, Rhy. Fig. 1, and Riff A
{a motif of unison bends and D minor melody) are
Combined into a simple but effective texture. The
concept is further emphasized in the overall rtf con-
sciousness in the songwriting, arranging and structure
evident throughout the compositions. Consider the
