Methergine

Methylergonovine maleate (Methergine) acts directly on the smooth muscle of the uterus to increase tone, rate, and amplitude of contractions, inducing rapid and sustained uterine contractions. It is indicated for routine management of uterine atony, hemorrhage and subinvolution following delivery of the placenta. Potential side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, leg cramps, increased sweating, skin rash, headache, dizziness, ringing in the ears, stuffy nose, and unpleasant taste. Nurses monitor fundal height and lochia, assess blood pressure before and during administration, and observe for signs of ergot toxicity.
