Gettysburg Address Summary
The Gettysburg Address was given by Abraham Lincoln. It was a “Dedication of
Soldiers at National Cemetery” on November 19, 1863. Lincoln's speech followed the Secretary
of State, Edward Everett, who was a featured speaker who gave a speech about 2 hours long.
Lincoln's only lasted 2 minutes. Lincoln's speech focused more on the topic of preserving
self-government rather than the bare itself. Lincoln never even mentioned “slavery”
“Confederates” or “Union” and instead he invoked principles of equality and emphasised the
healing of the country and continuing to work towards the ideas the Declaration of Independence
is built off of. Lincoln's to suffering and destruction of the way and have meaning to it. He
attached meaning without even mentioning the name of the battle, turned the “war-ravaged
town” into a symbol of democracy and duty. “Of the people... for the people”. His speech is
recognized as an “enduring” statement of American values and goals. The speech itself is not
what was so special, it was the actions that have been taken to accomplish the ideas mentioned
that gave people hope.
