Understanding Cross-Cultural Management

Cross-cultural management involves managing people from different cultural backgrounds effectively. Hofstede identified six dimensions of culture that affect management - power distance, individualism, masculinity, time orientation, uncertainty avoidance, and indulgence. These dimensions influence how managers and employees perceive areas like leadership, decision making, risk taking, and planning. Managing cross-cultural teams presents challenges around communication, policies, and behaviors but also opportunities to build strong relationships and serve diverse groups through adaptive practices.

SIX
dimensions of Cross-cultural management by Hofstede
• Six Dimensions
• Power distance
• Individualism
• Masculinity
• Time orientation
• Uncertainty avoidance
• Indulgence
• POWER DISTANCE
• The extent where the workers with minimal power think and gradually
believe that power is distributed unequally.
HIGH POWER DISTANCE
 Dominating bosses
 Significant subservience
 Inequality
 Subordinates feel themselves less important and not to be consulted
while making a decision.
LOW POWER DISTANCE
 Democratic bosses
 Little subservience
 Little but equality
 Subordinates feel themselves more important and to be consulted while
making a decision.
 Let’s learn POWER DISTANCE with an example-
 In a regular working day, your boss comes at your desk and shout at you
for making a little mistake. You can’t speak up or give your statement.
Others are also looking at you being silent.
 >> This situation demonstrates HIGH POWER DISTANCE.
 On the other side, your boss comes and discusses important decisions
with you before finalizing something.
 >> This act shows LOW POWER DISTANCE.
INDIVIDUALISM
The cultures that emphasize on individual needs and behaviors over a group of
people.
Individual culture includes-
 Independent belief
 Individual needs the center place and highly preceded
 Self-supporting tendency
Autocratic culture
This culture totally contrasts collectivism
MASCULINITY
Cultures that follow more male-norms in various initiatives, activities or
attitudes. It is believed that, for higher score in social successes, people need to
follow more masculine culture.
• A high score in society refers to the favor of MASCULINITY culture
• A lower score demonstrates the opposite. It shows FEMININITY is favored
more.
UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE
People try to follow some rules to predict the uncertainties and tend to handle
their lives according to a plan.
But it they feel the situation unpredictable, they leave it.
>> This also shows the aspects of HIGH UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE culture.
On the other side, LOW UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE demonstrates the exact
opposite view.
Here, people feel more ease and accept the disorganized situations following
the less rules as much as possible.
INDULGENCE
The culture that explains the level of controlling and suppressing the desires and
the way of living.
This is a very WEAK control over the cultures and behaviors.
But there is also STRONG control, that includes following strict rules while
crossing cultures and behaviors.
This kind of suppression is known as Restraint.
Time Orientation
A culture that refers to different attitudes regarding time, including past,
present and future.
>> LONG TERM ORIENTATION is followed when a society or organization
concentrate on the future, and focusing less on the short term success or
materials.
>> Whereas SHORT TERM ORIENTATION is all about fulfilling the present
hierarchy of the duties and responsibilities, and achieving short term successes.
