3. About sound
Sound is a sensation felt, a perception of what takes place How noise is measured
around us, caused by various compression waves which
cross the eardrum and are captured and transformed by our How are the noise emissions of a waste system measured in

Sound is a wave that is:
Elastic (it needs a medium to be propagated)
Longitudinal (perturbation takes place parallel to the
direction of propagation)
<= 35 dB (A)
To exist it requires:

themselves that products are suitable for the purpose and application intended.
Recommended techniques for ensuring acoustic insulation in Wavin installations include insulating wall cavities and avoiding direct contact between the waste system and the framework to prevent noise diffusion. Pipes should be wrapped in insulation material if contact with cavity walls cannot be avoided. Acoustic insulation also benefits from using 45° elbow joints instead of 90° to avoid sharp changes in direction, and fitting circular brackets with corrugated rubber inserts tightly to prevent movement . Additionally, passages through floors and walls should be insulated with anti-vibration materials, and housing around pipes should be coated with plaster to prevent acoustic bridges .
To prevent noise transmission in multi-story buildings, waste systems should incorporate progressive changes rather than sharp deviations to reduce noise from fluid contact. Pipes should be sized to allow free circulation of sewage and air, use brackets with rubber inserts to limit vibration transmission, and fix the pipes to load-bearing walls rather than containment structures to prevent vibrations . Acoustic insulation is further enhanced by using elastic materials for wall and floor passages and ensuring pipes are concealed or installed behind solid walls to comply with building codes for acoustic insulation .
Push-fit couplings in Wavin systems accommodate thermal expansion by allowing a maximum 10 mm slide out of the sleeve for pipes up to 3 meters in length. This accommodates variations in length due to thermal factors. It is important to ensure that the lip seal in the coupler channel is in condition, and the coupling should be lubricated adequately to prevent friction during thermal expansion .
Using brackets with rubber inserts is crucial in maintaining a quieter plumbing system as they significantly reduce the transmission of vibrations from the pipe system to the structural elements of a building. Rubber inserts act as shock absorbers that dampen vibrations caused by fluid flow and external forces, preventing those vibrations from being transferred to walls, ceilings, and floors, which would otherwise amplify noise levels. This design feature is essential, especially in multi-story buildings where noise control is a concern .
Mixing different pipe systems can compromise noise absorption capabilities because even though systems may have compatible diameters, they may not offer the same noise-absorbing features. Consistency in the material properties across the installation ensures that vibrations and noise are not inadvertently amplified or inadequately absorbed by certain components. Additionally, using systems designed to work together can prevent unintended acoustic bridges or vibrations propagating through the system .
The formation of acoustic bridges between piping systems and walls can lead to an increase in noise transmission throughout the building. These bridges, which occur when piping directly contacts a wall, act as conduits for sound, allowing vibrations to pass more freely between these structures. This can not only reduce the effectiveness of installed soundproofing measures but also contribute to user discomfort and potential violations of acoustic regulations in building standards .
The use of various joint bends, such as 45° and 90° bends, in Wavin systems contributes significantly to soundproofing and structural efficiency by optimizing fluid dynamics. Using 45° bends instead of 90° avoids sharp flow changes that can result in higher noise levels and increased stress on the system. By allowing more gradual transitions, sound and vibration are minimized, maintaining the system's acoustic and structural integrity, especially in complex layouts .
The Wavin SiTech system is designed with low-noise features such as multi-layer pipes made of a 3-layer structured compound combining copolymer polypropylene and mineral-filled polypropylene. This structure enhances sound insulation while the elastomer gasket ensures a tight, leak-free connection. The system also uses specific connectors and brackets to minimize vibration and noise transmission, maintaining both acoustic performance and structural integrity. Circular brackets with rubber inserts and carefully planned pipe layouts further support these objectives by minimizing rigid contacts and absorbing potential vibrations .
Advantages of the Fire-Stop collar include quick installation with a tab closure system, effectiveness in sealing against fumes, gases, flames, and heat, and compatibility with various pipe materials such as PVC, PP, ABS, and PE. It doesn't require special diameter tolerances and is easy to fit around pipes. Applications of the Fire-Stop collar extend to both internal and external wall or ceiling installations, enhancing fire safety by expanding and sealing effectively to prevent the spread of fire and smoke .
Wavin's Fire-Stop collars are designed for fire resistance using a stainless steel structure with an internally placed graphite-based intumescent sheath. Upon exposure to high temperatures around 150°C, the intumescent sheath expands to about 20 times its volume, exerting pressure that blocks the pipe, thus preventing the passage of flames and fumes. The combination of durable stainless steel and the reactive intumescent material provides an efficient barrier, ensuring the Fire-Stop collar is rated to REI 180 standards for both walls and floors .
