DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS IV
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Measure the length and width of a rectangle;
2. Find the area of a rectangle when the width and length are given;
3. Show enthusiasm in any given task.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Area of a rectangle
Materials: Cut outs, tape measure, flash cards
Reference: Mathematics IV, PELC
Value focus: Works with others cooperatively
III. LEARNING EXPERIENCES
Teacher’s Activities Pupil’s Activities
A. Preparatory Activities
* Drill
-Class as I flash these cards, give the answer.
7x9= 9x8= 6x4=
8x8= 7x5=
* Review
Checking of assignment
- Class what is perimeter? - Perimeter is the total
measurement of the
sides around the
polygon.
- Who can measure and solve for the perimeter
of this polygon?
* Motivation
The teacher will distribute the cut outs to the pupils.
- Class, find the group through the shape that you have.
Those have the same shape will be in one group.
- Class before that, what will you do when you have a
group activity in your class? - Each member of
the group must
participate.
- Very good! Now let us have a game.
- Assemble the puzzle to form a meaningful figure. If
you have done the activity, just clap your hands five
times and say “we’re done sir” then post your work
on the board. The group who finish first will the winner.
B. Developmental Activities
* Presentation
- Class, do you know the shape of this figure? What shape
is this? - It is a rectangle.
- Excellent! In a rectangle, we have length and width.
Show the illustration to the pupils.
* Discussion
- How many units is the length of the rectangle? - There are four square
units.
- Very good! How many units is the width of the
rectangle? - There are three square
units.
- Excellent! How many units are there in all in the
rectangle? - There are twelve square
units in all.
- Very good! You hit the point!
Give more examples.
- From the example I have given, how do we get
the area of a rectangle? - We can get the area of a
rectangle by multiplying
the length and the
width.
- Very good! Then what is the formula to get the
area of a rectangle? - The formula to get the
area of a rectangle is
A = L x W.
* Guided Practice
- Same group, let us have a group activity again.
Using the tape measure, get the measurement
of the length and width of the blackboard and
find its area using the formula A = L x W.
* Independent Practice
The teacher post more cut outs of rectangle
on the board then call for the pupils who wants
solve for area.
* Generalization
- Class, how do we get the area of a rectangle? - We can get the area of
by multiplying the
length and width.
- Excellent! What is the formula? - The formula is
A = L x W.
- Very good! I’m glad that you have understood
the discussion. Now, let us see if you have
really learned our lesson today.
* Application
Give the area of the following rectangle.
1. 15m 2. 6cm 3. 11cm
24m 15cm 24cm
4. 9cm 5. 13mm
12cm 24mm
IV. EVALUATION
Find the area of the following rectangle.
1. 25m 2. 13cm 3. 10m
34m 24m 15m
4. 6m 5. 22mm
9m 32mm
V. ASSIGNMENT
Mang has a farm planted with a corn. It is in a shape of a rectangle with a length of 250m
and a width of 155m. Find the area of the farm.
