NOTE:
Each student must do his work independently and the design in no means must match with
that of the other student. In case of similarity both the projects will be canceled. The data
assumed for the project must be making the sense and properly referenced with the source
(book, research publication, manual) taken from. In the absence of the reference the marks
will be deducted without any justification.
STATEMENT
Propose suitable dimensions and angle of a finite slope in consultation with the standard
reference books. Assuming appropriate properties for c-φ soil evaluate the stability of the slope
designed by either using the mass procedure or method of slices.
RUBRICS FOR EVALUATION
(1) Plagiarism 30%
(2) Authenticity of the data assumed 20%
(3) Referencing 20%
(4) Procedure executed for the analysis 20%
(5) Validity of the results 10%
Question:
Refer to the figure of the soil given below. Using the Ordinary Method of slices,
analyze the soil by finding different parameters for the following given data.
Data:
H = 15.2 m
Β = 45
Α = 30
Ɵ = 70
Ƴ = 18.9 kN/m3
Ф = 18
C’ = 31 kN/m2
Answer:
I solve the above question as mentioned by using Method of Slices.
First I will explain the step by step procedure then I will calculate the required
parameters.
Procedure:
i) Draw cross-section to natural scale
ii) Select failure surface
iii) Divide the failure mass into some slices
iv) Compute Area of each slice
v) Compute total weight of each slice
vi) Compute frictional resisting force for each slice
vii) Compute cohesive resisting force for each slice
viii) Compute tengential driving force for each slice
ix) Sum resisting and driving forces for all slices
Solution:
By referring to the figure given in the question
We get
50/x = sin 30°
x = 100 ft
50/R= sin 35°
R=50/ sin 35°
R=87.17 ft
With radius R = 87.17 ft, the trial surface circle has been drawn.
Now Making Table
Slice Area of Weight of αn (deg) Wn cos αn Wn sin αn
Slice(ft2) Slice(kip/ft)
1 345 41.75 47 28.47 30.52
2 462 55.9 32 47.4 29.62
3 825 99.82 20 93.8 34.14
4 312 37.75 5 37.6 3.29
⅀ 207.27 97.57
Now By using the formula of factor of safety we get
Fs = R Ɵ c’+(⅀ Wn Cos αn) tanФ’/⅀ Wn Sin αn
Fs = (87.17)[(п/180)*70](0.65)+(207.27)(tan20)/97.57
Fs = 1.4
Which is the required result.
