Understanding Concept
Pigeon Raising
Aside from poultry, the family can also raise other animals like pigeons. Pigeon
raising is popular in the country today. Pigeon raising is a good hobby for children and
adults as well. It is also a good source of income and is used for sports.
Breeds of Pigeons
There are common breeds of pigeons that are adaptable to Philippine condition.
1. King Pigeons – This breed is raised for their meat. They are usually white in
color and also used in weddings.
2. Racing Homing Pigeon – These breeds are called Homer, the racing Pigeon.
They are muscular and strong flyers with powerful instinct and trained to return to
their loft after the race.
3. Fancy Pigeon – This breed is raised as a hobby and kept as pets. They are
used for competition similar to dog shows.
4. Feral pigeons – These breeds are well adapted to cities and suburbs. These are
the common blue pigeons that roost in buildings and forage for food in public
plazas.
Tips in raising Pigeons
A. Provide a good house or loft for the pigeons. Proper housing is the pre-requisite
of successful animal raising. Pigeons need adequate housing to protect them
from cold and hot weather. The pigeon’s loft should be properly constructed to
keep the birds healthy and vigorous. The size of the house depends on the size
of the birds, type of breed, and purpose.
B. Provide clean food and clean water supply every day.
When feeding the pigeons:
1. Used whole grains and mix them thoroughly.
2. Protect the feeds from moisture, molds or pests.
3. Use corn, sorghum, soybean, rice, and legumes seeds.
4. Give adequate feeds for the chicks to eat to allow them to grow fast.
C. Provide a container for bath of pigeons. Pigeons bathe 2 to 3 times a week.
D. Provide the right fixtures for pigeons raising.
1. Nest – Scatter dried leaves in the coop before the mother bird lays eggs.
2. Feeding trough – It contains the animal feeds for the birds.
3. Drinking trough – This is the place where the birds drink water.
4. Dropping board – This is used to catch the pigeon’s manure is used as
fertilizer and feeds for cows
E. Separate sick pigeons at once.
F. Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in the pigeon house.
G. Clean the feeding and drinking trough regularly.

Understanding Concept
Good Grooming and Body Care
Good grooming starts with personal cleanliness and good health habits.
How do you achieve a pleasing personality? Good grooming, good health, good
posture, and good character make a delightful and wholesome personality. It is
important for a boy or a girl like you to be well-groomed.
Personal Grooming
Referred to as personal hygiene, is the act of taking care of your body through proper
cleanliness and self-care. Personal grooming not only affects the way others see you,
but also has an impact on how you feel about yourself. When you look and feel your
best, you are able to present yourself confidently to others.
Proper hygiene and body care are important for the following reasons:
1. A clean mouth contains several hundred billion bacteria, and this number
increases tenfold when the mouth is not sufficiently cleaned. Bacteria inhabit
tooth surfaces - threatening oral health. Oral health care, primarily mouth
cleaning, is an important component of a healthy lifestyle.
2. Your physical appearance is the first impression that people have of who you
are. Choosing to ignore common personal grooming habits may indicate to those
around you that you are not detail-oriented; that you do not take pride in your
work because you do not take pride in your appearance; or that you are not
someone who desires to be taken seriously.
3. Poor grooming can indicate to others that you lack self- esteem. In turn,
presenting yourself less than your best can affect how you feel about yourself
and may create poor self- image and discomfort in social settings.
What are the characteristics of a well – groomed person? A well-groomed person has:
Clean face, hands, feet, and body
Well – trimmed nails
Clean and shiny hair
Clean clothes
Good posture
Good set of teeth
Care for the face and Eyes
Wash your face thoroughly with mild soap to remove dirt. Rinse it very well
with water, then dry your face by patting it gently with a clean towel.
Your eyes are the windows to your soul. People can see how you feel by
looking at your eyes. You must take care of your eyes to enjoy and appreciate things
surround you. How do you clean your eyes?
Use a clean handkerchief to wipe your eyes. Never rub them with dirty hands.
Read in a well-lighted room
Do not read while in a moving vehicle.
Avoid exposing your eyes directly to light.
Care for the Teeth and Mouth
Your teeth are used for chewing. Brush your teeth after every meal. Use a
round and soft toothbrush with enough toothpaste.
Proper brushing takes at least two minutes. To properly brush your teeth, use
short, gentle strokes, paying extra attention to the gumline, hard-to-react back teeth and
areas around fillings, crowns or other restoration. Concentrate on thoroughly cleaning
each section as follows:
Clean the outer surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth.
Clean the inner surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth.
Clean the chewing surfaces.
For fresher breath, be sure to brush your tongue, too.
Floss once a day.
Most dental professionals agree that a soft-bristled brush is best for removing
plaque and debris from your teeth. Small-headed brushes are also preferable, since
they can better reach all areas of the mouth, including hard to-reach back teeth.
It is important that you use a toothpaste that's right for you. Today, there is a wide
variety of toothpaste designed for many conditions, including cavities, gingivitis, tartar,
stained teeth, and sensitivity. Ask your dentist or dental hygienist which toothpaste is
right for you.
You should replace your toothbrush when it begins to show wear, or every three
months, whichever comes first. It is also very important to change toothbrushes after
you've had a cold, since the bristles can collect germs that can lead to reinfection. Visit
your dentist once or twice a year. Avoid eating too much sweets. It hastens tooth decay.
