A noun phrase is a group of words that acts as a noun and includes a head noun and any modifiers. It consists of a noun or pronoun and any dependent words that come before or after to provide more specific information about the head. Noun phrases can be just a single noun or pronoun, or can include determiners, adjectives, nouns as modifiers, and quantifiers preceding the head noun. They can function as subjects, direct objects, objects of prepositions, or indirect objects in sentences.

Noun phrases

- A group of words which has a subject but no finite verb


and does the work of a noun.

- A noun phrase consists of a noun or pronoun, which is


called the head ( main noun or pronoun), and any
dependent words (modifiers) before or after the head.

- Dependent words give specific information about the


head.

Noun phrase makes the noun more specific

Car = Noun

Modifier + Noun = Noun phrase

How to use noun phrases?

1. Determiner + Noun = Noun phrase


= Our friends have bought a house in the village.

2. Adjective + Noun = Noun phrase


= Our closest friends have just bought a new houses in
the village.

3. Quantifier + Determiner + Noun = Noun phrase


= All those children waiting for food.

4. Can be just a noun or a pronoun


= People like to have money.
= I am tired.

Determiner > Adjectives > Nouns as modifiers > Head

1.A noun phrase acting as a subject


= The yellow house is for sale.

2.A noun phrase can be a direct object


= I want a skate board.

3.A noun phrase can be the object of a preposition

= Alex gave the little boy a candy.
