PRE REQUISITE(S) : DET1013 ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY
SYNOPSIS
ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS designed to provide students with the knowledge of electrical
circuits. It emphasizes the principles of an alternating current AC waveform and
sinusoidal steady-state circuit analysis. This course also covers the applications of
three phase system and operation of various types of transformers.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO)
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:-
1. apply the concept and principles of AC electrical circuit and their analysis using
AC circuit law. (C3 , PLO1)
2. solve problems of AC electrical circuit using the appropriate AC electrical laws
and theorems. (C3 , PLO2)
3. conduct the laboratory exercises of AC electrical circuit using appropriate
electrical equipments. (P4 , PLO5)
4. demonstrate ability to work in team to complete assigned tasks during practical
work sessions. (A3 , PLO11)

SUMMARY (LECTURE : PRACTICAL)
SST RTA
1.0 ALTERNATING VOLTAGE AND CURRENT (06 : 04)
Alternating current, generation of an alternating current,
sinusoidal voltage and current values, angular measurement of
a sine wave, phasor to represent a sine wave, applying basic
circuit laws to resistive AC circuits and various voltage and
current values.
2.0 SINUSOIDAL STEADY-STATE CIRCUIT ANALYSIS (10 : 12)
AC basic circuits, circuits with inductive and capacitive load,
series/parallel R-L-C circuits, combination of series-parallel R-
L-C circuits and power consumption in AC circuits.
3.0 RESONANCE (04 : 06)
Resonance in series and parallel circuits, quality and
bandwidth of a resonant circuit.
4.0 THREE PHASE SYSTEM (04 : 04)
Three phase system and configurations
5.0 TRANSFORMERS (06 : 04)
Mutual inductance, construction and the operation of a
transformer, transformer increases and decreases voltage,
effect of a resistive load across secondary winding, non-ideal
transformer and various types of transformers.

ASSESSMENT
The course assessment is carried out in two sections:
i. Continuous Assessment (CA) – 50%
Coursework assessment that measures knowledge, practical skills and generic skills are carried out in the form of continuous assessment.
Coursework assessment total score comprises the knowledge and practical marks ONLY. It does not include the mark of generic skills.
ii. Final Examination Assessment (FE) – 50%
Final examination is carried out at the end of the semester.
