I. Introduction
The flying disc, more commonly known as the Ultimate, has been used as a
sports instrument more and more all over the world throughout the past few years. Disc
sports in all its facets is a fast growing sport. Today, all over the world and especially in
the USA there are millions of people fascinated by the unusual throwing characteristics
of a disc, which are thrown at the beach, in Disc Golf, in Guts, in Dog Frisbee, by
Freestylers and in Ultimate Frisbee. In all these areas, people are trying to use the
special characteristics of disc trajectories. Sometimes, quite extraordinary flight paths,
such as S-shaped curves, can be observed. Some athletes reach throwing distances far
more than 200𝑚. (Bernandi, 2016) Others achieve air hangtimes of more than 16
seconds before catching the disc afterwards (Bernandi, 2016). In Ultimate Frisbee
athletes need to execute their throwing routine so precisely that a running teammate
can catch it easily in spite of being followed by an opponent player within one meter
distance. In every discipline, there are highly experienced throwers all over the world.
Every one of them has optimized his own moving program by throwing the disc
thousands of times. Therefore, this study will try to summarize the recent science about
the biomechanical aspects of throwing a disc in Ultimate.
II. BACKGROUND
a. The Aim of the Game
Ultimate is a non-contact, self-refereed team sport played with a flying disc. Two teams
of seven players compete on a playing field about the same length as a football field,
but narrower. At each end of the playing field there is an end zone. Each team defends
one end zone. They score a goal if one of their players catches the disc in the opposite
end zone. The player with the disc is called the thrower. The thrower may not run with
the disc. Instead they move the disc by passing to team-mates in any direction. The
defensive team gets possession of the disc if an offensive team’s throw is not caught by
a player of the same team. Then the defensive team becomes the offensive team and
can try to score in the opposite end zone.
The Playing Field
b. Spirit of the Game
Ultimate relies upon a Spirit of the Game that places the responsibility for fair play on
every player. There are no referees; the players are solely responsible for following and
enforcing the rules, even at World Championship. Competitive play is encouraged, but
never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic
joy of play.
Spirit of the Game is the mindful behavior practiced by players worldwide prior to, during
and after a game. It encompasses attitudes and skills such as good knowledge and
application of the rules, fair-mindedness, safe play, and spatial awareness, clear and
calm communication, and positive and respectful attitude towards teammates, fans, and
opponents, in a mutual effort to protect the basic joy of play.
c. World Flying Disc Federation
The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) serves as the international governing body
for the sport of flying disc, with responsibility for sanctioning world championship and
other international flying disc events, establishing uniform rules, and setting standards
for and recording of world records. It acts
To promote and protect the “spirit of the game” of flying disc play;
To encourage flying disc play throughout the world and foster the establishment of
new national flying disc associations, advising them on all flying disc activities and
general management;
To promote and raise public awareness of and lobby for official recognition of flying
disc play as sport; and to provide an international forum for discussion of all aspects
of flying disc play.
The World Flying Disc Federation is the international sports federation responsible for
the world governance of flying disc (Frisbee), including Ultimate (Grass & Beach), Disc
Golf, Freestyle, Guts, and Overall. WFDF is a federation of 86 member associations
which represent flying disc and their athletes in 84 countries. WFDF is an international
federation recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International
Paralympic Committee (IPC), FISU, a member of ARISF, GAISF, the International
Masters Games Association (IMGA) and the International World Games Association
(IWGA), and it is a registered not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation in the state of
Colorado, USA.
d. Philippine Flying Disc Association
The Philippine Flying Disc Association (PFDA, formerly known as Philippine Ultimate
Association) is the highest governing body of all disc-related sports and activities in the
Philippines. We are a non-stock, non-profit volunteer organization of enthusiastic
Ultimate players who organize regular tournaments, training exercises, and other
activities for Ultimate players.
III. Objectives, Implementation and Strategies
a. Objectives
The most important aspect of any game of Frisbee is in the throwing, with proper
execution the game will be smoothly done and to have a high chance of winning. This
requirement is pursued in order to provide information about the biomechanical
movement analysis of skill, throwing in the sport, ultimate.
The objectives of this output are as follows:
1. To demonstrate basic throws (forehand, backhand) and advance throws
(hammer and air bounce throw.
2. To explain the 6 phases of movement of basic throws and advance throws in
ultimate.
b. Implementation Plan and Strategies
The proponents came up with this activity because of their interest with ultimate,
they want to learn more about the game, specifically, information about the basic
skills and advance skills in throwing a disc and its movements. This activity is
essential with teachers, coaches or even players to have more understanding
and proper execution in doing the game. This can serve as their guide with their
trainings and actual game.
Biomechanical Movement
Analysis
(Six Phases of Movement Analysis)
Segmental Analysis of Anterior, Lateral and
Posterior view of Throwing Backhand in
Ultimate
Backhand Throw
Phase 1. Stand erect, relax your body, feet apart at about 16 cm. Hold the disc in front
of your stomach. Little finger to index finger are placed under the disc while the thumb is
placed above the disc. Eyes on the catcher, focus and prepare for your throw.
Phase 2. Shoulders are laterally rotated to the left (R). Arms are flexed while both hand
fingers are holding the disc. Little fingers and index fingers are placed above the disc
while the thumb is placed under the disc. Left (R) foot remains in the ground while right
(L) is slightly raised and bent.
Phase 3. The whole body is in lunges position facing left (R) direction. Dominant hand
holds the disc with fingers place the same. Left (R) hand supports the dominant through
holding the disc also.
Phase 4. Body is in lunge position but a little bit lower than phase 3. Shoulder, from
rotated laterally turned to medial rotation. Right (L) is extended facing the direction of
the disc. Left (R) hand is relaxed and adducted.
Phase 5. Lunge position still lowered and fingers of the dominant hand are extended
from flexion used to throw the disc in a far direction. Left hand is relaxed and adducted.
Phase 6. Stand erect, relax your body, feet apart at about 16 cm. Arms are parallel in
front of your stomach and relaxed.
