a. a n where n is a positive integer
b. constants and variables
c. literal coefficients and numerical coefficients
d. algebraic expressions, terms and polynomials
e. number of terms, degree of the term and degree of the polynomial.
II. Background Information for Learners
In the language of Algebra, the following are important terms to remember:
a n where n is a positive integer
In a n, a is called the base
n is called an exponent
To read, “a raised to n ”.
If n is a positive integer, then a is used as factor n times.
a n = a x a x a x a … (n times)
Terms in mathematical expressions are composed of constants and variables.
Constants are numbers that have fixed values while variables are symbols or letters
that may take one or more than one value.
In 2 x+ 4 y +6 , 6 is the constant
x and y are the variables
Literal coefficient is the variable including its exponent in a term while numerical
coefficient is a constant that is multiplied to a variable. The word coefficient alone refers
to numerical coefficient.
In 3 x ² , x ² is the literal coefficient
3 is the numerical coefficient

e. number of terms, degree of the term and degree of the polynomial.
II. Background Information for Learners
Another important terms in Algebra that need to be understood:
Algebraic expression is a group of terms separated by plus or
minus sign
Term is a constant or a variable or a product of a constant and variable.
In an algebraic expression 9 a ²+ 11 b – c , the terms are 9 a ² , 11b ,−c .
A polynomial is an algebraic expression where the exponents of the
variables are all whole numbers (non-negative exponents).
An algebraic expression is NOT a polynomial if:
a. The exponent of the variable is NOT a whole number.
b. The variable is inside the radical sign.
c. The variable is in the denominator.
A polynomial can be classified according to the numbers of terms and according to its
degree.
Kinds of Polynomials according to the number of terms
a. Monomial – polynomial with one term
Examples: a ² , 4 y ,−21 , ay
b. Binomial – polynomial with two terms
Examples: z +4 , 9(x+ 1) – 6 , √ 2 x ²+ x
c. Trinomial – polynomial with three terms
Examples: a 2+ a – 1 ,6 x ³ – x ²+2
d. Multinomial – polynomial with four or more terms
Examples: x 5+ 2 x 4 – 3 x 2 – 4 ,5 ab ³+3 a ²+ 4 a+ b – 7
Degree is the highest exponent or the highest sum of exponents of the variables in a
term. The degree of an expression is the highest degree of its terms.
In 3 x 4 y 2+ x −7, the degree is taken by adding the exponent of x which is 4 and the
exponent of y which is 2.
Thus, 4 +2=6.
Therefore, the degree of 3 x 4 y 2+ x −7 is 6.
Kinds of Polynomials according to its degree
a. Constant – a polynomial of degree zero

Examples: 500, -7,
5
b. Linear – a polynomial of degree one
Examples: x +6 , 81 a , x – 3 y , z
c. Quadratic – a polynomial of degree two
Examples: 8 x 2 , ab , 13 x ²+ 5 xy , 23 ab+7
d. Cubic – a polynomial of degree three
Examples: 2 abc , 4 x ² y – 2 y ,3 x ³ – 2 xy + y ²
e. Quartic – a polynomial of degree four
Examples: 16 x 4 , a2 b2 ,5 x ²+4 x ³ y , 18 a ³ b+7
f. Quintic – a polynomial of degree five
Examples: 10 a2 b2 c ,9 x 2 y 3 – 2 y ,10 x 5 – 2 xy+7 y ²
The next degrees have no universal name yet, so they are just called “polynomial of
degree ___________”.

To evaluate an algebraic expression means to substitute the given value for the variable
then simplify the resulting numerical expression following the
PEMDAS/GEMDAS/BODMAS rules.
Steps to follow in evaluating algebraic expressions:
1. Substitute the given value for each variable.
2. Simplify first the expressions inside the grouping symbols.
3. Simplify the expressions with exponents.
4. Perform all multiplications and divisions from left to right.
5. Perform all additions and subtractions from left to right.
Example: Evaluate x 2+ 3 x −2; where x=2
Solution:
2
x 2+ 3 x – 2 ¿ 2 +3(2)−2 Substitute the given value for x
¿ 4 +3(2)– 2 Simplify the expression with exponent
¿ 4 +6−2 Perform the multiplication

Adding Polynomials
VI. Learning Competency with Code
Adds and subtracts polynomials (M7ME-IId-2)
VII. Background Information for Learners
Different operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division can be performed on
the polynomials. A polynomial is an expression within which a finite number of constants and variables
are combined using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and exponents.
In adding polynomials, we should consider the following:
only similar terms can be added;
to add, polynomials, simply combine similar terms;
to combine similar terms, get the sum of the numerical coefficients and annex the same
literal coefficients; and
if there is more than one term, for convenience, write similar terms in the same column
and add.
Example 1:
(3 x 2+5)+(5 x 2 +7)
Solution:
3 x 2+5
+ 5 x 2+7 Arrange like terms in the same column
8 x 2+ 12 Add like terms by adding their coefficients with their signs
Example 2:
