QBA (Class Test) Autumn 2020

1. PERT is used for planning complex projects with uncertainty while CPM is used for simpler projects with fixed activity times. CPM finds the critical path and minimum project duration while PERT finds the estimated completion time accounting for uncertainty. 2. The critical path for the construction project is A-E-H with an estimated completion time of 16 weeks. To shorten the project by 4 weeks, activity E should be crashed with a final total cost of $59,900. 3. Sequencing is determining the order of operations or activities. Some assumptions are that each activity has a predetermined duration and dependencies exist between activities.

b) Here are the precedence requirements, normal and crash activity times, and normal and
crash costs for a construction project: 5
Activity Preceding Normal Crash Normal Crash
Activity Time Time Cost Cost
A - 3 2 8000 9000
B - 8 6 600 1000
C B 6 4 10000 12000

ii. To shorten the project by 4 weeks which task should be shorten and what would
be the final total project cost?

c) What is sequencing. Write some assumptions of sequencing.

d) A machine operator has to perform three operations: turning, threading, knurling on a 3
number of different jobs. The time required to perform these operations (in minutes) for
each jobs is known. Determine the order in which the jobs should be processed in order to
minimize the total time required to turn out all the jobs. Also determine the idle time of
each operations.
