Q.Calculate heat exchanger area needed to cool 80 Tons/day (6666.67 lbs/hr) of glue (Specific heat
=0.90 BTU/LB◦F) from 117◦F (47◦C) to 81◦F (27◦C) using cooling water that is available at 48◦F
(09◦C). The cooling water can be allowed to heat to 62◦F (17◦C).Also calculate the mass flow rate of
cooling water.
Heat Transfer Rate Calculation:
Q = m.Cp.(T2-T1)
= 6666.67 lbs/hr X 0.90 BTU/LB°F X (117°F-81°F)
= 216000 BTU/HR (62.6 KW)
Heating Surface Area Calculation:
A= U x A x ΔTm-----------------------(i)
T1= Inlet tube side fluid temperature (Glue hot side = 117°F (47°C)
t2= Outlet shell side fluid temperature (Water cold side=62°F (17°C)
T2= Outlet tube side fluid temperature (Glue hot side = 81°F (27°C)
t1= Inlet shell side fluid temperature (Water cold side=48°F (09°C)
ΔTm=

ΔTm = (117°F - 62 °F) – (81°F - 48 °F)
ln(117°F - 62 °F)
(81°F - 48 °F)
ΔTm = 44 °F

L = thickness of the wall, [ft] = 0.0131234 ft
λ = thermal conductivity,[Btu/(hr-ft°F)] = 28.9 Btu/(hr-ft °F)
1/U = 1/150 + 0.0131234/28.9 + 1/176
1/U = 0.0067 + 0.0005 + 0.0057
1/U = 0.0129
