1. Introduction
Akua is a network design software for sanitary sewer and storm drains. It serves both to make
new designs, and modeling systems. In minimum time optimal designs are available and final
plans ready for the execution of the work.

Akua not complicate the designer with too many variables and options, but assumes the
technologies, units of measure commonly used formulas and automates much of the data entry
process.

Some features:

o Reading cartographic database in vector format (dxf, shp) and raster (jpeg, bmp)
o Visual layout of the nodes and segments,
o Drawing outline maps and contour lines,
o Automatic calculation of lengths, areas, and expenses,
o Optimal design of slopes and diameters,
o Views on Zoom, panning and 3D
o Calculating the volume of work,
o Results tabulated in Excel,
o General layout drawing and AutoCAD profiles,
o Ability to work with multiple subsystems simultaneously
o Facilities for the simulation of networks.

2. Tutorial
The following tutorial shows several simple steps the easiest way to design a sewerage system
using Akua:

1. Read the mapping

2. Viewing the project
3. Mark the project area
4. Draw the network
5. Run the design
6. Check the results
7. Export results

2.1 Read the mapping

The first step in a new design or simulation of the behavior of an existing network is to import the
base map on which to model the network. This mapping must be in full scale, looking for
corresponding a drawing unit to a linear meter.

This base can import files from AutoCAD DXF, ESRI_SHP, JPEG and BMP.

Create a new project.

Import Ex-1.dxf file found in the program folder and we see the following screen:

Select the layer COTAS. This layer is from the original AutoCAD file in it are coordinates
alphanumeric values that will be used to processes contours.

6
SewerUp 5.2 Manual

Uncheck the box Monochrome and click OK.

2.2 Viewing the project

Akua has available CAD tools for Zoom, Pan, Undo and Redo:

To exit the current command just press ESC key.

A convenient way to make changes of scales and scroll the screen is to use the mouse wheel.

Try the following:

1. Rotate the wheel forward and backward to scale dynamically.
2. Holding down the wheel, move the mouse to scroll the screen.

2.3 Project Area

The implicit method for estimating the consumption is based on assigning to each section an area
proportional to its length. This requires knowing the total work area, which can be obtained in
several ways. For more details see Areas.

In this tutorial we will use the "Mark Perimeter".

Select the total area: Tools> Area and the following screen:

Select Mark Perimeter.

Clicks by successive mouse around the perimeter of the area and to close the polygon press the
Right Click.

7
SewerUp 5.2 Manual

2.4 Draw the network

The sewer system consists of nodes that represent manholes and link that represente pipes:

To trace the network click with the mouse the position of each node and then link them:

1. We zoom into the area where the link will be inserted:

2. Insert starting node clicking in the insertion point. We are asked the topographic level of each
node. Proceed similarly with the final node.

3. Select insert link. Now you click near the starting node without lifting the mouse and drag it to
the final node.

4. Proceed so on until we draw the entire network.

2.5 Run the design

Before proceeding to the network design must ensure that we have satisfied the following
requirements:

1. In a node can enter several links but only one can go,
2. There can be no circular references.

Akua is responsible for making validation of data prior to designing, verifying, among other things,
the following:

1. Has loaded the base map,

2. Have a value for the project area,
3. There are no disconnected or duplicate links,
4. There are no multiple outputs of a node.
5. Disconnected nodes are deleted automatically and links greater than the specified maximum
length are divided.

The end result is the assignment of the hydraulic gradients at each collector so as to obtain
minimum diameters and excavations and comply with all restrictions imposed by Globals.

8
SewerUp 5.2 Manual

After completion of the design is presented a screen with the values of the end sections of each
subsystem and general working volumes.

2.6 Check the results

To see how the design has been made, click on a link with the mouse, being shaded in green.

At the bottom of the screen a cross section and the profile is projected , highlighting the water
level.

In the right table, the parameters of the active nodes and links are shown. Click any cell to change
its value:

4.1 Adding nodes

Mark based on mapping the insertion point of the new node, requesting the topographic elevation
of that point. If you already have the benchmarks the program proposes a default resulting from
the interpolation of the coordinates:

SewerUp draws the node keeps its topographic level and automatically assigned an identifier.

4.2 Insert links

Once the end nodes are drawn, insert a link that connects them.

Mark near the start node and without lifting the mouse drag it to the end node.

12

4.3 Modify the network

Drag the node to another position.

Remove loose nodes.

Reverse the flow direction of the link.

Divide the link by half.

Joins adjacent links.

Delete the active link.

5.1 Global Data

Before proceeding to the network design must provide the following information:

With these parameters we obtain the boundary conditions to be met by design, and data
necessary to estimate flows.

Some of these parameters are governed by specific rules in different countries. This is the case
of minimum flow, minimum coverage and the safety factor.

The minimum recommended speed is 0.6 m / s, but also varies with the different rules.

The minimum coverage and the rate of infiltration depends on soil conditions.

14
SewerUp 5.2 Manual

The checkboxes specify which of the boundary conditions will be considered during design. For
example, if you clear the check box minimum gradients and minimum tractive tension. The design
will only consider the minimum speed criterion for sizing the slopes of the links.

You can make a distinction in the header sections in which the flows are usually small. In these
cases the coefficient is used for initial links, which affects the speed values and tractive force. You
can also play with the value of the minimum slope in initial links.

5.2 Pipes
You must complete a table with the following items for each type of pipe:

o Material,
o Nominal Diameter (mm)
o Inner Diameter (mm)
o Outside Diameter (mm)
o Manning roughness coefficient,
o Recommended minimum slopes,
o Width of the trench,
o Section type (circular or rectangular).

The minimum diameter slopes are based on recommendations to be considered (or not) during
the design of the network. Be omitted, Akua use default values.

The width of the trench is used to calculate the workloads. Likewise, be omitted, default values
are used.

From the inventory, Akua extract combinations to optimize the design, ie. achieve the lower

15
SewerUp 5.2 Manual

slopes and smaller diameters which satisfy the constraints imposed in the Global Data.

In a new project in order to have starting values, Akua automatically complete this table with
common PVC piping. Then the designer decides whether to use or forms its own assortment of
pipes.

If you have data shared by different projects, it helps to export and import inventory later when
needed.

5.3 Sectors
In order to define different areas of consumption, hydraulic sections can be defined, then, when
estimating the flow, the correspondent link is assigned for each section.

Disabling a sector its links will not be considered in the design and results.

If you turn Preferences> Workspace> By Sector. each sector will be identified by their color.

To change the ID of a section double-click on the list.

STORM DRAINAGE NETWORKS

16
SewerUp 5.2 Manual

5.4 Flow
Flows are estimated based on the information available or the rules and preferences of the
designer.

SANITARY SEWER NETWORKS

In any case it is necessary to associate the sector it belongs to the section, or take the sector
average by default.

Akua proposes several ways to estimate the flow, in each case must turn on the box only for the
type of desired estimate.

Methods of estimating the flow with Akua:

1. The implicit method is based on calculating the population from the area that contributes to the
link and the population density in the industry. The area of contribution is calculated as proportional
to the length of the link, in this case the option is activated: Area Proportional. Alternatively you
can enter the area of the section: Fixed Area.

2. The second method is based on introducing directly the population that corresponds to link.
Akua calculate the cumulative population and the maximum discharge coefficient (M Harmon).

In both cases the population obtained is multiplied by the per-capita contribution for the sector to

17
SewerUp 5.2 Manual

obtain the average flow. The average flow value is affected by the maximum discharge
coefficient, by the safety coefficients, the flow infiltrated and concentrated flow (if any) to obtain the
value of the local flow to that link.

3. If you know the local flow of a section or want to calculate it by another method, you can enter
this value and ignore the above steps. You can also specify a concentrated flow.

To the flow of the section we add the contributions from upstream reaches to obtain the
cumulative flow in the section, which is the one used in the design of the network.

4. For the case of existing networks. you can enter the cumulative flow value.

STORM DRAINAGE NETWORKS

To determine the flow of rain the program uses the rational method, expressed by the equation:

Q=C.I.A

Where:

Q : Is the flow to be evaluated for one given design probability .

I : The rain intensity according to the probability of design under consideration.

18
SewerUp 5.2 Manual

C : The permeability coefficient or runoff according to the characteristics of soil and its surface.
A : The area that contributes its runoff.

Considering the duration of the rain equal to the concentration time of the basin.

C and I values are associated with the sectors, which must have been previously defined. so you
can distinguish different sectors runoff coefficient and rainfall intensity.

The rainfall intensity should be obtained from the Intensity - Frequency - Duration curves or
Isohyets maps of the study area.

5.5 Design
The result of the design is the assignment of the hydraulic gradients at each collector, achieving
minimum diameter, minimum excavation and complying with all restrictions.

Once completed the design a screen is presented with the values of the final sections of each
subsystem and workloads:

19
SewerUp 5.2 Manual

The Edit option opens the table in the NotePad from where you can edit or print.

5.6 Hydraulic analysis

The design is always done for Maximum Flow. Hydraulic Analysis option allows you to see how
the network behaves when driving Flow Medium or Minimum. Is considered Q.Min = Q.Med / 2.

Select the workflow to check and verify changes in velocity and tractive tension on each link. You
can mark sections in the drawing at a slower velocity than specified.

5.7 Pumping Stations

20
SewerUp 5.2 Manual

Define the parameters of a pumping station located at the end node of a link.

The input data are the parameters of the discharge pipe.

Based on the flow and the entrance level the program designs the wet well and the point of
operation of the pumps.

There are several options for entering the coordinates of the field:

1. Importing a DXF layer file with the numerical values of the coordinates of the field.

2. When inserting a node, enter the value of the topographic level. Akua will be shaping the
topography of the project area. For this case Settings> Fixed value nodes must be
deactivated

3. Import a comma separated file (extension. Csv) with the following format:

24
SewerUp 5.2 Manual

This table can be prepared in a spreadsheet and save with extension (. Csv).

To view the ground seeding, the box Settings > Ground must be activated.

The results of the reference levels can be checked on contours.

If you check the box AutoFit nodes levels, nodes mapping will accommodate to cartography.

6.3 Mapping
Allows you to modify the base map.

The activation or not of the layer boxes define if the layer is visible or not.

You can also enable or disable the mapping, or determine whether it will look like in the format of
the source file or as gray monochrome.

Ground Level Layer can be used to import the reference topographic elevations. An AutoCad layer
with any name must be created , in which only appear the number of the ground level.

Example of ground layer in AutoCAD:

How to simulate an existing network?

You can design new networks, simulating networks or enlargements. For the simulation of
existing sections, proceed as follows:

1. Define the sections as "Existing Link"

2. Set the initial level and slope of the section or the levels of extreme nodes.
_________________________________________________________________________

How to draw long links?

A practical way to save time during the design of the network is to make the links as large as
possible and let the program adjust the lengths to the maximum allowed in the Global Data. For
example:

Design

________________________________________________________________________

A way to speed up data entry is enabling Settings> Nodes with fixed dimensions. This way, level
is not requested when inserting a node. Then insert a topographic base in .csv format and
enable the option Topology> Adjust the levels so that the program automatically adjust the level of
each node.
