Chapter 1. Introduction

This document introduces a project to create a mobile digital library for elementary students. It aims to develop a platform to provide access to books, journals, magazines and other educational content. The system will be designed using various software and evaluated based on standards for usability, maintainability and other criteria. While technology has increased the scope of libraries, some still rely on paper-based systems that are less efficient than computerized options.

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

1.2 Project Context

Reading a book acts as the source of many knowledge and information throughout

the world. It enables as to pass the information and knowledge from generation to

generation. With the progress of the technology and changes day in and day out in every

aspect of life, it has become quite difficult for the people of world to acquaint themselves

with knowledge and preserved it for further use. So, in this scenario this project has been

developed to help people to access valuable items of information and knowledge from wide

variety on a single platform.

1.3 Purpose and Description

Digital library evolution, although have not reached full potential, are advancing.

However, the evaluation of digital libraries has not kept pace. There has been little work on

understanding the nature of usability or how digital libraries are used in a nature setting. We

need further work on methods for analyzing usability, including an understanding of how to

use appropriateness of techniques, and practical limitations. This research aims to provide

an effective digital library that collect and organize digital information and disseminate at the

point of care and for future use. Provide facility and services to support research, teaching

and learning, and scholarly communication access disciplines.

1.4 Objectives

The objective of this study is to develop a mobile digital library for elementary

student of Arellano University, Jose Rizal Campus.

Specifically, it aims to,

1. To create a Digital Library with the following features;

a. To search books, journals, magazines and many other formats that

is specified by the user

b. To give access to multiple contents with a potentially infinite number

of resources and selections at hand.

c. Instant access to educational content every time.

2. To design the system using AppsBuilder, adobe photoshop, and xampp

for database management;

3. To evaluate the performance of the system using ISO 25010, in terms

of Usability, Maintainability, Portability, Functional Suitability and

Performance Efficiency.

1.5 Scope and Limitations

The impact of technology has greatly expanded the scope and capacity of

the average library. This is an on-going and developing relationship as the

computer's full capabilities are gradually explored and applied to the library. The
availability of learning resources has been massively expanded through access

to the Internet, again facilitated by the use of computer technology.

Without computers, as some libraries are, all of them are dependent on

paper work. When compared to computerized systems, data backup and data

retrieval systems are inefficient and labor intensive.
