Multicultural Britain

The document discusses multiculturalism in Britain and how immigration has changed the country from predominantly white British and Christian to a diverse population of cultures and beliefs. While large cities have become extremely multicultural, smaller towns and villages remain less diverse. Issues around segregation, education levels compared to natives, and lack of integration policies that encourage interaction between ethnic groups have contributed to separation within society.

Multicultural Britain

Multiculturalism is the diversity of two or more cultures in a particular region or country. Some
people think that multiculturalism is negative, while others consider it positive. I agree with the
second perspective, that it is positive. Since World War II, the United Kingdom has had an
immigration flow that has radically changed its nature. The population changed from one in
which the world was spread in white only, ethnically speaking British and Christian, to one
differentiated in cultures, communities and beliefs around the world. Big cities like London,
Manchester and Birmingham are extremely multicultural but small towns and villages are much
less so. I think this is because immigrants have historically gathered in larger cities to look for
work. Now a degree of demographic diversity forms an inevitable part of life in the UK.
Multiculturalism invokes these huge demographic changes, political, legal, theoretical debates
and government attempts to accommodate and promote cultural diversity. However, many issues
and debates are included in the multicultural society. “Ghettos” are developing because of
politics and discrimination. Education is less than the English natives. Although immigration
policy tolerates immigrants more, I do not consider that they put enough into their integration. I
think these reasons are some of the big problems that lead to the separation of society in the UK.
With a large minority population disconnected from the majority, part of the problem appears to
be a simple lack of regular interaction and contact between ethnic minorities and most white
Britons. The UK needs a society, which makes the different cultures interact and communicate
with each other. So, in conclusion, multiculturalism is not a bad thing, on the contrary, it leads to
the union of each race. People need to get used to the idea, and to accept immigrants and their
descendants for a better society.
