Observer Effect
O - While getting ready
1. E - He is always confused about what to wear for the office but on the observation
day he pre-decided his clothes as he wanted to display organized behavior that he
practice on daily basis.
O - While leaving for office
2. E - He generally gets ready by 8:45 AM and leaves at around 9:00 AM but that day
to maybe show that he is well ahead of time, he left for office at 8:45 AM.
3.
O - Practicing yoga
E - He exercise and perform stretching positions of yoga but that day he decided to
practice meditation, when I asked him why, he said that I read yesterday that
meditation unifies breathing and helps to strengthen the immune system so he
should practice it as we are currently living in COVID-19 world.
Observer Effect
4.
O - Singing while driving
E - He usually turns on the radio but on the observation day he started his day with
his favorite song.
O - I wasn't able to go to his office and track down his day over there but in order
5. to support my observation he called me that day to brief me about what all things
he is doing that day.
E - He rarely calls during office hours because he prefers not to and is mostly
occupied with one or the other work, but that day he took this special initiative to
contribute for my observation report.
O - During family time
6. E - He checks on his mails and send daily average sales during the family time but
that particular day he did this before his dinner.
Observer Bias
O - Opens up balcony door every morning while reading newspaper, I
1. stated that he loves the fresh air, the sound of birds' chirping.
B - Maybe he just prefers to read his newspaper in the natural sunlight
2.
O - Iron his clothes on his own, I said he prefers to do that.
B - Could be that he has to do it because he has no other option as mom
is busy preparing his meal.
O - He sings while driving, I said he is in a habit of doing that.
3. B - Maybe he sings because he feels good when he sings or it helps him
to lighten his mood and enjoy his time before getting into the hectic work
schedule.
Observer Bias
4.
O - Make tea for himself and sometimes bed tea for mom because she
wakes up after dad.
B - Could be that he enjoys making it or he just can't wait for mom to wake
up and make a cup of tea for him as he is a big chaiphile.
5. O - He keeps things on his desk in proper alignment and notes down the
tasks to be performed next day in advance. I stated that he do this
because he is well organised.
B - Maybe it is because he is particular about hygiene and notes down the
tasks in order to not to miss out or forget anything, the following day.
Observations after rework
1. I realized that while tracking down the observer bias effect, I am
again getting biased in concluding the reason behind my dad's
actions for the observation day.
2. I also noted that while talking to my dad, asking him about the
reason for his actions, that most of his actions do not hold a very firm
objective behind it.
3. I comprehended after series of considerations that he performs these
gestures unconsciously just because he wishes to do so, certain tasks
give him pleasure and a few because of his proclivity, his habit of
carrying out specific chore.
Observations
1. Difficulty in dealing with lazy people
2. Happiest time of the day is when he is around the family members
3. Enjoys singing while driving
4. Prefers to note down the tasks for the following day in advance.
PROCESS:
These observations are then further drilled using 5 whys technique and the
root cause at the end of each questions drill is then converted to form an
insight and finally the insight is used to frame a 'How Might We' question.
