Plan of Investigation
In order to complete my school based assessment for English A and B, I have chosen the

topic ‘How dancehall Music Affect the way teen dress” which was derived from my groups

overall topic ‘Teen and Music”. I choose this topic because teens in Jamaica are adopted to

dancehall music and actually follows some of what the songs are saying, and I would like to

know the effect they have on teens.

To complete my school based assessment, I will collect and analyses appropriate data

and present my findings and ensure that the conclusion I have drawn is valid. I will collect

information from a range or prints and audios relating to my topic.

The expectations I have is to build my reading and writing skills and also expand my

vocabulary. Finally, this research should allow me to gain knowledge on teens and the ways

in which dancehall music affect the way teens dresses.

Reflection 1
As I started my research about ‘Teen and music’ I was curious about how music affect the

ways we make choices. I collected several information from sources that was found regarding

to my topic.

My first article was a song entitles Clarks by Vybz Kartel ft. Popcaan and

Vanessa B ling which states that the shoes he wears people was intrigued by it and that he

was interrogated about that specific shoes which was Clarks. This showed me that persons

were also interested in what others wear and that this type of shoes was becoming more

known by others.

The second piece of article I obtained was a photograph of a Jamaican artiste

‘spice’ looking confident in her body and the outfit she wore. This article showed that being

comfortable in an outfit makes a major difference in how the clothing actually looks.

The third piece of article was a song entitled ‘Jeans and Fitted’ by Vybz karet ft

Rvssian. This artist explains the type of clothing he wears and which he prefers. This article

Showed me how artist can be convincing.

Reflection 2
Language can be used to inform or explain human experiences. In the three pieces of data

selected for my school based assessment, the writers used languages efficaciously to carry out

these experiences.

The three pieces that were collected each has a different language usage. The audio

is a song by a popular Dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel (Adidja Palmer), it is entitled “Clarks”.

This song features International Dancehall artist Popcaan (André Sutherland). This song has

an informal language, as it is addressed to the general Jamaican society. The informality of

the song makes it easier to relate to, especially by the Jamaican inner city persons, as these

artistes are from the inner city themselves. From listening this song, the artistes are

instigating excitement over a pair of high branded shoe, Clarks. “A weh yuh get deh new

clarks deh daady, a which colour that? Mad einuh pawdy” sings Popcaan, which implies that

there is a fine pair of shoes that caught his attention. When this hit song was released

promoting the Clarkes Shoes, it began trending even more. This audio was straight forward

and the message was presented in a style and way which was easily interpreted.

The printed source, which is the lyrics of the song “Straight Jeans and Fitted” by Vybz

Kartel, sees the artiste going into detail about his appearance. He speaks of his most common

attire, “Straight jeans and fitted,” speaks about his pants being “fitted,” in a simpler term, it’s

his perfect size, its tight. Tight pants were and are still the trend among Jamaican young men.

The DJ further went on to say, “Ina white t-shirt we did it, we rock dose shades to di limit,”

without further ado it can be testified that this popular style of dressing for men in Jamaica

was influenced by these lyrics from the best of the best Dancehall artiste, that young men

looked up to as a role model. Whether it be dressed up with nice jewelry or their clothing be

of a branded quality (which the artiste speaks about in his song), this is their style. This
printed piece was also very straight forward, it went straight to the point and the piece

boasted an informal language.

The visual piece was simple; however it represented the topic and good is easily related to.

The piece is a picture of popular Jamaican female DJ Spice (Grace Hamilton). In this picture

we can see the DJ looking very poised and confident posing in her black bodysuit which is

paired with a broad silver choker neckpiece, knee length strappy high heels and the singer is

also sporting a blue hair. Her bodysuit which is partially sheer has recently become the

common trend among females. This suit is worn by females across the different age groups. It

is also a popular party outfit; it may not have been brought to the forefront by dancehall

artiste but the endorsement it has received from some of them has made it more popular.

Whether the artiste is seen wearing it them self or it is their dancers attired in it, a message is

still sent to some of their supporters. High heel is also becoming more popular with Jamaican

woman in these appealing outfits which some may find appalling. Colored extension is

something endorsed by Spice, she takes bold moves with colors; this might motivate some

fans to invest in this trendy look. The photograph is appropriate and familiar; informal.
Reflection 3

During the process of I have learnt English A and B school based assessment a lot of things

which have helped me in many ways. It has helped me to understand why teens are

fascinated with dancehall music and dancehall artist instead of being confused. I don’t have

to rely on my own misunderstandings instead I have researched on my own which has

assured me about this.

This process has also helped me to work together in groups. It also helped me to

state my opinion. I normally abstain from doing so because I was afraid of being wrong or

appearing illiterate or ignorant. However, engaging consistently in peers has helped me

accepted animadversion and take correction.

Therefore, I have learned that I shouldn’t give up at first try but try until I succeed.
Written Report

In order to complete the English SBA portfolio, I connected with several individuals who

shared a similar interest in the theme ‘Teenagers and Music’. We acquired our materials by

browsing the materials and analysing the information we found. We then chose the artefact

that closely relates to the topic. The Divide and the Conquer strategy was used in which the

main topic was branched off into sub-topics relating to the main topic. Eventually a video and

two online articles was used to answer our group’s questions:

● How does music affect teenagers

● The Effect of Music on teenager

● How music influence teens to become sexually active and violent for the artefacts

used, the SOAPStones strategy was used to understand the pieces. The first steps we took

was identifying the speaker and the context that inspired the writing. The next procedures

were to know the audience, the materials aim towards to determine the purpose of these

articles and pinpoint the main topics or issue being presented. The final step we took was to

understand the speaker's tone and attitude. After analysing and discussing the data acquired

we chose 3 materials that closely relates with our subtopics and the general one. The article

“How does Music Affect Teenagers?” written by Lipfer.P, was one of the online articles

chosen because the writer highlighted how music have changed over the years and researches

carried out which proved that drugs and sex are often mention in pop, rock, R&B and hip-

hop.

The article,” How Music Affect Teens” by Mariam,S.,(2009),featured how rap and rock

lyrics concentrated on negative thoughts .This online article was chosen since the author

emphasized on how rap and rock music teenagers listen to can have an positive effect on
them by relating to problems they may be dealing with in their personal lives and how it can

also negatively impact teenagers by influencing them to experiment with drugs. The video,”

Dancehall effects on Youths” showed that the views people have about music having an

impact were contrasting. One man that was interviewed state that the parents were the ones to

also be blamed for not raising their children the right way. The purpose of the video was to

demonstrate how dancehall and the society can lead youths down a bad path where they carry

out criminal acts. As a group, we were satisfied with the data collected and the work done as

we worked together.

Dancehall music is a popular genre of Jamaican music. It is composed

of iridium fast upbeat rhythms than the traditional reggae music. Aw the years

goes by it as become more popular. The younger population are more fascinated

with this type of music.

Most teens look up the popular artiste as role models and they would like to

follow in their footsteps

Since the 1960s Dancehall music had an impact on the fashion world. From

bell foot pants, platform heels and afro hair. Since the years go by fashion as

change and different trends and different styles have

Hughon Goldsmith, a Seventh-day Adventist medical missionary and one who

spends time giving lectures on how influential music is, gave Family and

Religion some insights on the topic.

According to him, music is so powerful that not only does it have an impact on

the person and his or her mood, but it affect persons choice on what the should

wear or how they should dress. Goldsmith stressed that music without the words

(instrumental) is powerful, so with the words, it can be even more impactful. If

popular artiste such as vybz kartel or Alkaline sings a song about how teens

should dress teens would feel the need to follow that artiste.
When these artiste sing these songs and a certain type of clothing become

trending even teens that doesn't listen to dancehall music would feel the need to

dress a certain way because they want to fit in and look like everyone else

It is also said in dancehall fashion that the more skin you show the sexier you

look. Young females who feel they have to dress a certain way to look more

attractive will wear skinny clothes to be noticed. To some people it makes these

young females look like what they call sketel and it makes them look degrading

but to others it look appealing

It is concluded that dancehall music have a huge impact on teenagers in our

society and that would continue to be so for a long time.
