I. Essay
1. Describe God’s attributes and existence (20 pts).
I think what was so shocking to me as a twenty-year-old woman, was that you
could think about God in such endless vast terms. I mean, I thought I had God sort of
summed up when I read on the doctrine of God. What are God’s attributes? When we talk
about the attributes of God, we are trying to answer questions like, who is God, What is
God like, and What kind of God is he? An attribute of God is something true about him.
While fully comprehending who God is impossible for us as limited beings, God does
make himself known in a variety of ways, and through what he reveals about himself in
his Word and in his creation, we can begin to wrap our minds around our awesome
Creator and God. When we speak of God’s attributes, we are talking about those
characteristics that helps us to understand who He truly is. That which follows is a
thorough, yet incomplete list and summary of His attributes. Eternality, Mercy,
Goodness, Omnipotence, Grace, Omnipresence, Holiness, Omniscience, Immanence,
Righteousness, Immutability, Self-Existence, Justice, Sovereignty, Love, Transcendence.
I have come to the conclusion that there is something greater than people, which
created or prompted the creation of the universe. Something must have prompted the start
of the universe and created life. Despite the fact that I am not confident that there is
caring or intervening God, I believe that God exists.
2. Discuss Revelation and Inspiration in the context of humanism (20 pts).
At the mention of “Divine Revelation”, my thoughts on it before were very narrow
and simple. Back then, I would have mostly thought of revelations that occurred during the
time when Jesus Christ was still alive. I had this expectation that the revelations would be
mostly relating to the prophecies that we know from the bible, or what the church is
constantly saying is the message of God.
However, after getting to know the lesson more in detail and better, I realized that
my perception of the topic was wrong, as “Divine Revelation” is much broader and more
meaningful than we realized. Furthermore, I was able to understand better how “Divine
Revelation” or simply God’s revelation is still very much present in modern times today.
Divine inspiration, on the other hand, refers to the recording of God’s truth. It means that
God preserved the writers from recording error when they wrote the various parts of
Scripture. All of the things they recorded are accurate. The words were actually said and
the events actually happened. Revelation, therefore, is concerned with the giving of truth,
while divine inspiration refers to the recording of truth. It is important that we understand
the difference.
This brings us to an important point. The Bible is divinely inspired, but not every
word was divinely revealed. Divine inspiration does not always imply revelation. To put
it another way, we should not necessarily assume that everything in Scripture has been
divinely revealed by God.
3. Elaborate the importance of conversion (20 pts).
Genuine repentance leads us to unconditionally surrender our will to God. Once
we come to that point, Peter says the next step is to "be baptized in the name of Jesus
Christ for the remission of sins" (Acts 2:38).
Conversion is a reminder of several deep spiritual truths. It represents death,
burial and resurrection—both of Jesus and ourselves. Baptism shows that we accept the
shed blood of Christ for our sins and pictures the death of our former life in the baptismal
grave. As Jesus was resurrected a spirit being, our coming out of the grave—rising out of
the baptismal water—symbolizes our new Spirit-led life. Our understanding of the true
meaning of repentance and conversion lifts baptism to much more than just a symbol; it
becomes a profound, life-changing event.
Baptism is not the conclusion of the conversion process. It marks a beginning for
us. In Romans 6 Paul refers to baptism as a summons to “walk in newness of life.” In
verse 11 he states that, rather than facing death, we become “alive to God in Christ Jesus
our Lord. “Christ died for us while we were yet sinners, and that is God’s proof of his
love towards us. And so, since we have now been justified by Christ’s sacrificial death,
we shall all the more certainly be saved through him from final retribution. For if, when
we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how
much more, now that we have been reconciled, shall we be saved by his life!” (Romans
5:8-10, REB).
4. How do you convince a person who does not believe in the theology of the Godhead
(20 pts).
If you cannot show your friend from the Bible it’s origin and purpose, you may
very well confuse your friend more. The Bible is God’s word and has all the answers a
person needs to any of life’s questions. What it does not have is a single teaching or
doctrine of the trinity. What then is a good way to learn? I choose to meditate on Jesus’
words to a sincere scribe at the temple in Mark 12:28–34, or his answer to the apostle
Peter in Matthew 16:15–17 or what he said at John 14:28….and Luke 11:10–13….each
of the gospels has a ton of insight and information from Jesus himself about his Father,
about himself and about Holy Spirit but not once does Jesus speak of a trinity or Triune
God. If you or your friend research it a bit, it is not difficult to find the pagan influence
that shaped the trinity doctrine adopted by the church some 300 YEARS after Jesus
walked the earth. If you believe that Jesus was honest, that he spoke and acted out of love
and wanted others to do the same, study what he said about both himself and his Father
and see if you can reconcile that with what most churches today teach.
The point here is that something doesn’t need to be rational, logical, or intuitive to
be true. Our entire universe is run by forces that are neither intuitive nor logical.
But to answer your question, you can tell your confused friend that the Trinity is 100%
God in the form of three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But each part of the
Trinity is also 100% God. In the spiritual world, 100% + 100% + 100% = 100%, not
300%.
This concept will probably be difficult for your friend to understand, but as we
have seen, in our universe, something doesn’t need to be logical to be true. Indeed, the
Trinity is no more mysterious than Quantum Physics which has been proven thousands of
times to be 100% true. In the final analysis, the Trinity just is what it is, whether we
understand it or not.
5. Describe your personal assessment and evaluation on what you learned on the study of
God and human life (20 pts).
The turmoil of life brought me down many hard paths from which I never fully
recovered, until I met Jesus Christ. I could see that I was ending up in the wrong place, and
I did not know how to get out of it. I had not been faithful to what was in my heart. I knew
I was missing something. I knew I was missing Christ.
In loving God, you will know His will and purpose. By then you will develop
compassion among the lost. Helping the people during war is hard to do. It is dangerous. It
needs compassion to do such thing. It needs faith to serve the people. This is the most
effective thing in sharing the word of God. How will the people believe on the word that
you will be saying when your life speaks in contradiction of the gospel? In sharing the
word of God, it is necessary that you first were transformed by the word. Prayer is a tool
that will enable every servants of God to acquire wisdom, strength, and the like that will
be needed during the journey. Serving God needs a heart that is pure. It means that you
need to correct your motives. God do not want a servant that has a wrong motivation.
Even a self-will is not acceptable in God’s presence. You will not see God when you
heart is not pure. On the fifth beatitude Jesus said: Blessed are the pure in heart for they
will see God. It is clear that what God wants is a servant that will truly serve Him to
the fullest.
I learned in the Study of God and Human Life that Everything is temporary. Our
journey here on earth is a preparation for the life in the future, the everlasting life. In the
first place who are we to ask God why He allows things to happen? We are just the pot. He
is the potter. Everything He wants to do with His creation He can do. But because we have
a Creator that is full of mercy, we are assured that everything we go through is for our
good. He is just polishing us to shine like a diamond. All we have to do is to trust in His
will.
