Waste Water Treatment: Stage 1: Screening

Waste water undergoes four stages of treatment. In stage 1, screening, sewage is screened to remove large material and grit. In stage 2, primary treatment, sewage goes through sedimentation where heavier solids sink and produce sludge, and lighter effluent floats. In stage 3, secondary treatment, effluent is aerated and treated through biological digestion where bacteria break down organic matter. In stage 4, final treatment, sludge is broken down through anaerobic digestion producing methane gas that can be used as an energy source, and the remaining waste used as fertilizer.

Waste Water Treatment

Complete the sentences to describe what happens at each of the stages.

Stage 1: Screening
The sewage is s_________ to remove any l_______ bits of material (like twigs or
plastic bags) and any g______ (small bits of stone and sand).

Stage 2: Primary treatment

Then it goes through s______________. The heavier solids sink to the bottom to
produce s_________. The lighter e_________ (liquid waste) floats on the top.

Stage 3: Secondary treatment

The e_________ is r_________ and treated by biological a_________
digestion. This is where b_________ break down any o_________ matter –
including other m__________ in the water.

Stage 4: Final treatment (tertiary)

The s________ is also broken down by bacteria in a process called a__________
digestion. This produces m_________ gas which can be used as an e__________
source. The remaining waste can be used as a fertiliser.
