4.02 Exploring The Universe

Viking 1 and 2 probes transmitted panoramic views of Mars for six years, while the Pathfinder probe landed on Mars in 1997 and transmitted more detailed environmental data for three months. Improving imaging and communication technologies allowed probes like Viking 1 and 2 to send back the first photos of Mars, while later probes like Pathfinder were able to directly study the Martian surface and atmosphere. Further advances, like spectrometric equipment on probes such as Mars Odyssey and Mars Express, enabled analysis of Mars's composition and climate. These improvements have led to discoveries about Mars' environment and evidence that water once existed on its surface.

lReflection Questions- Video 1

1. Compare the Viking 1 and 2 probes to the Pathfinder probe that landed on Mars in
1997. How was their technology different? Viking 1 and Viking 2 transmitted six years
of panoramic views from Mars to Earth, while the pathfinder spent three months
transmitting large amounts of martian environment data. For study, the Viking 1 and
2 probes sent photographs of the Martian landscape back to Earth, while the
pathfinder was the first robotic rover to directly reach the Martian atmosphere.
2. Mariner 4 and 9 and Viking 1 and 2 probes needed enhanced cameras and wireless
communication equipment to take images of Mars's surface and send them back to
Earth. According to the video, how did improving our technology lead to new
discoveries about Mars? Improving our technology led to new discoveries such as
that life on mars did once exist because of evidence that water was found
underground at the martian poles.
3. Using internet resources, describe how advances in imaging and wireless
communication for space exploration have led to changes in imaging devices and
communication on Earth. It has helped us to discover that life on mars did once
exist because of evidence that water was found at the martian poles.
4. Mars Odyssey and Mars Express required spectrometric equipment that could
analyze Mars's atmosphere and surface composition and temperatures. Using
internet resources, describe some home or business technologies that use
spectrometric equipment to analyze atmosphere or temperature. Spectroradiometer
are used to separate, quantify, and analyze the spectral characteristics of a light
source.
5. Using internet resources, research one space probe described in the video.
Describe its goals and justify its purpose by explaining how it helped advance our
understanding of the universe. A probe is a spacecraft that flies across space to
collect information about science. Probes don't have any astronauts, they send
information back to earth for scientists to analyze. Voyager 2 is an example of a
space probe.

Reflection Questions- Video 2

1. What are radio waves? Radio waves are invisible waves that can be detected by
only radio telescopes.
2. Describe how radio telescopes function. It functions like a television antenna, a
gigantic parabolic reflector senses the radio waves which then concentrates them
toward the top of a focusing antenna.
3. What are the advantages of using a radio telescope instead of a reflecting or
refracting telescope? Radio telescopes can be used burning night and day time,
even when there’s a cloud cover.
4. Using internet resources, describe the ways radio waves are used on Earth. Radio
waves are used for television, radio broadcast, mobile phones, wireless networks,
and many other communication applications.
5. How do radio telescopes help advance our knowledge of our universe? Radio
telescopes help advance our knowledge of our universe by examining the frequency,
power and timing of radio emissions from these objects.
