ROSEMAX™
REFINING
Advanced Equipment to Maximize
the Value of ROSE®
ROSEMAX™
Refiners’ desire to enhance the operation of their existing solvent deasphalting or
ROSE® operations have led to new developments in ROSE separator vessel internals
and flow distributors to increase both capacity and efficiency of ROSE separators.
These developments are a result of collaboration between Kellogg Brown & Root and
KOCH – GLITSCH, INC.
Our proprietary ROSEMAX™ equipment benefits ROSE licensees in several ways. For
existing ROSE units, ROSEMAX equipment is an economical means to debottleneck
for higher throughput and an avenue leading to improved quality of the deasphalted This 16,000 BPSD three product ROSE unit at

operating and capital costs and increased operating flexibility.
Our current commercial applications of ROSEMAX equipment include both the ROSE
asphaltene and deasphalted oil separators. Capacity increases of up to 60% have
been achieved, while circulating solvent purity has improved by up to 90% over
pre-ROSEMAX operation. These advantages have been realized in existing ROSE
units with separators retrofitted with new ROSEMAX equipment.
State-of-the-art computer-flow modeling, pilot plant testing, cold-flow modeling of en-
gineering analyses were performed during the development of ROSEMAX equipment
prior to its first commercial application during the summer of 1995. This work led to the Marathon Ashland Petroleum’s 30,000 BPSD
development of new proprietary packing capacity correlations for liquid/liquid service ROSE Unit at Garyville, Louisiana, was retrofitted
with ROSEMAX separator internals for increased
consistent with the operating conditions in ROSE separators. By the end of 2009, capacity and improved product quality.
ROSEMAX internals were installed in nine commercially operating plants.
Employing our proven ROSEMAX technology allows us to select the proper packing
(crimp size, crimp angle, surface treatment, arrangement, etc.) and distributors to
optimize both extraction efficiency and coalescing capacity.
Maximum benefits are the result of improved rejection of asphaltenes from the
deasphalted oil, higher-circulating solvent purity, higher-quality deasphalted oil and
subsequent lower operating and maintenance costs. ROSEMAX is available as a
retrofit for all existing ROSE and other solvent deasphalting units, is incorporated into
revamps of existing solvent deasphalters to ROSE technology and is an integral
feature of all new ROSE units.

Any refiner interested in higher capacity for an existing solvent deasphalting unit, higher
yields of deasphalted oil, higher-quality deasphalted products and lower operating costs
should consider the advantages of state-of-the-art ROSE supercritical fluid technology
coupled with ROSEMAX proprietary internals. Together, they provide optimum perfor-
mance for all the production of deasphalted oil from heavy resides.
Extra profits result when ROSEMAX is applied to a solvent deasphalter. ROSEMAX
products are available to ROSE Licensees and other solvent deasphalting technology
exclusively from Kellogg Brown & Root. ROSEMAX packings are exclusively supplied to
KBR by KOCH-GLITSCH, INC..
The ROSEMAX internals include high-efficiency, high-capacity extraction packing, as
well as special feed and solvent distributors, to maximize yield and improve quality of
the deasphalted oil product.
In addition, high-capacity ROSEMAX ROSEMAX high capacity structured Cleaner solvent results in improved
