Case Study Hiv Ob

A 28-year-old pregnant patient tests positive for HIV but has no AIDS symptoms. The nurse educates her that highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) involving retroviral drugs during pregnancy and delivery can significantly decrease the risk of transmitting HIV to her baby, but that breastfeeding is not recommended as it increases transmission risk. The baby should be tested for HIV antibodies at regular intervals up to 18 months old to determine if transmission occurred.
