Tuts Britis STANDARD, having been approved by the
Mechanical Engineering Industry Standards Committee and
endorsed. by the Chairman, of the Engineering Divisional
Councit, was: published under the authority of the General
Council on 26th November, 1951.
‘The Institution desires to call attention to the fact that
this British Standard does not purport to include all the
necessary provisions of a contract.
In order to Keep abreast of progress in the industries
concerned, British Standards are subject to periodical
review. Suggestions for improvements will be recorded and
jn due course brought to the notice of the committees charged
‘with the revision of the standards to which they refer.
‘A complete list of British Standards, numbering over 1700,
indexed and cross-indexed for reference, together with an _
‘abstract of each standard, will be found in the Institution’s
Yearbook.
* British Standards ore revised, when necessary, by the issue
either of amendment slips or of revised editions. 1t is important
that users of British Standards should ascertain that they are in
possession of the latest amendments or edition.age] D3 Oa é

STEEL SPRING WASHERS
FOR GENERAL ENGINEERING AND AUTOMOBILE
PURPOSES i
FOREWORD
This British Standard has been prepared under the authority
Mechanical Engineering Industry Standards Committee, in respo_
request from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
Steel spring washers have been standardized overseas, main!
railway field, while standardization in this country has concentrat; 3,
aircraft industry, in which special attention to the degree of f sh
faces has been necessary. It has, therefore, been found advisa!; thi

The term ‘lock washer” has been omitted from the title 4.
the standard as it has been agreed that a “spring washer" 3

4 DESIGNATION
2 ‘The washers shall be designated by the nominal sizes of the bolts
>with which they are used, as given in Col. 1 of Tables 3 to 6 inclusive.
SECTION TWO: MANUFACTURE
MATERIAL:
3. ‘Spring washers complying g with the provisions of this British Standard
shall be manufactured from steel complying with any one of the steels in
the En.42 range specified in B.S. 970, * Wrought steels."
HEAT TREATMENT AND HARDNESS
4. a, The washers shall be hardened and tempered after coiling.
The manufacturer shall then carry out two hardness tests from eact
section and type of washer in each “patch after heat treatment, havin
previously removed any decarburized material by grinding.
b. The hardness of the finished washers, after preparation as ii
Clause 4a, and as determined by a diamond pyramid test, shall be withi
the limits of 400/500 D.P.N., or its equivalent by other suitable hardnes
we machines.*
CLOSING AND TEST FOR PERMANENT SET
5. a. Single coil waskers. Sample washers shall be selected from bat
