6 Simple Machines

This document describes 6 simple machines: lever, inclined plane, wedge, pulley, wheel and axle, and screw. For each machine, a brief definition is given along with a graphic representation. The lever, inclined plane, wedge, and screw are described as tools that can lift or move objects using torque or an inclined surface to reduce the amount of force needed. The pulley and wheel and axle are described as machines that change the direction or transfer power between a rotating axle and belt or cable.

6 SIMPLE MACHINES

Simple Machine Description Graphic

Lever A lever is a simple
machine made of a rigid
beam and a fulcrum. When
an effort is applied to one
end of the lever, a load is
applied at the other end of
the lever. This will move a
mass upward. Levers rely
on torque for their
operation.

Inclined Plane An inclined plane is a

machine with a slope that
is supposed to raise heavy
objects. Much force is
required for this to work.

Wedge A wedge is a
triangular-shaped tool and
is a portable inclined plane.
It can be used to separate
two objects or portions of
an object, lift up an object,
or hold an object in place.
Pulley A pulley is a wheel on an
axle or shaft that is
designed to support
movement and change of
direction of a taut cable or
belt or transfer of power
between the shaft and
cable or belt.

Wheel and Axle The wheel and axle is a

machine consisting of a
wheel attached to a
smaller axle so that these
two parts rotate together in
which a force is transferred
from one to the other.

Screw A screw is a broad

category of mechanical
fastener with a threaded
shaft, designed to screw
into a part.
