Clasification of Computer

Computers are classified based on cost, memory, speed, and working principle. Microcomputers are general purpose, single user systems that are portable and inexpensive. They are used in homes and offices and do not require special environments. Minicomputers are also general purpose but support multiple users simultaneously. Mainframe computers are very costly and have large storage capacities. They support multiple users and require controlled environments. Supercomputers are the most sophisticated and expensive computers, dedicated for applications requiring large computations and high speeds.

Classification of computers:

1. Depending on the cost, memory capacity and speed, computers are

classified as Mainframe, mini, micro and super computers

2. Based on the working principle, computers are classified as Digital

and Analog

1. Microcomputers:Microcomputers are the general-purpose computers

that can be used for variety of applications. Evolution of microcomputer is
mainly due to the advancement in semiconductor technology. In contrast
to first generation computers, which occupied big room, microcomputer
are very small in size. Some of the characteristics of microcomputers are

1. Single user computer systems

2. Single processor

3. Highly portable and cheap

4. General purpose and mainly used in home and offices

5. No special environment like Air conditioner (AC) is needed

6. Key board and mouse as input device

7. Monitor for output

8. Floppy disk or hard disk for storing data and programs

permanently
Types of personnel computers: Due to the advancement in semiconductor
technology, the size of the personnel computer is considerably reduced.
Personnel computers are very compact and they are almost the size of a
notebook. Different types of personnel computers are

 Laptop Computers:

 Notebook computers:

 Palm top computers:

2. Minicomputers: Minicomputers are also general-purpose computer

like microcomputers but unlike microcomputers, which are single
user systems, minicomputers are multi-user system. Multi-user
system allows more than one user to use the computer system
simultaneously. Characteristics of minicomputers

 Mid range computers whose speed is in between micro and

mainframe computers
 Multi-user systems
 Faster than microcomputers
 Costlier than microcomputers
 Client server architecture

3. Mainframe computers: Mainframe computers are Used only in

applications which requires Massive calculations. They are very costly and
have extremely large storage capacity. Features of mainframe computers
are

 Requires controlled environment for operation eg: Air conditioner,

Dust free room
 Very costly, Large storage capacity, High speed
 Support multiple users.
 Eg: CDC Cyber, IBM AS 400 etc

4. Super computers: Supercomputers are the most sophisticated

computers which are normally used in application which requires large
amount of computation and high speed. They are very expensive and are
dedicated for sophisticated applications. Some of the characteristics of
supercomputers are

1. Designed for specialized applications

2. Very expensive and sophisticated.
3. Multiple CPUs works parallel.
4. Requires skilled technician and programmers to operate
